View Full Version : My first tourney

I have mixed feelings about posting this as the turnout for this thing was very poor. Not sure why the turnout was so poor.

Anyway, had 5 matches total and won all of them.

I have only reviewed the tape on the last two matches and there were tons of mistakes on my part but I guess less than the other guy.

Got a couple of decent throws and screwed up a few as well.

Got punched pretty dang hard for a light contact match. Jaw/ear are still sore and the ear has a little fluid build up. This guy was a better striker than me but I was better throwing and on the ground.

All the competitors I met were very cool. Good overall experience.

As soon as I can get the vids downloaded from the camera I will post them on my website for everyone to make fun of.:)

What sort of fighting was this? Light contact with throws and groundfighting? That seems like odd rules

Congratulations. I'm sure the turnout wasn't poor enough to discount your success. Now maybe we'll have time to get together. I know I'm not going to be able to talk you into coming to Johnson City for Master Mullins' tournament! :D

Brad, here's the link to the tourney.

http://www.usjujitsu.net/news/nationals2003/index.htm

heres the jjif link

http://www.jjifweb.com/

here's a link to a .pdf of the rules, not sure if it will work

http://www.jjifweb.com/html/pdf/JJIF-2-CompRules%20_V2_1.pdf

as you can see the main goal of USJJ/JJIF is to become an Olympic sport. so it's not a blood and guts venue. There were a few injuries over the weekend: one fractured shin bone, a few cracked ribs and one mean azz looking black eye.

Ap, I only have my last 2 matches against a Canadian guy on my camera. All the others are on someone else's camera but I will try to get mine up by the end of this coming weekend.

Thanks, JP.

Master Mullins tourney is in JC, right?

When is it?

If there isn't a grappling type of event then probably not.

If I decide to try and go to that training camp, and actually get on the team, I will probably not have time for squat till after all of that.

November 1 at Freedom Hall.

No grappling although the non-stop sparring allows non-joint lock takedowns if followed by a technique. Headgear is also required, but we will have extra there.

JP, I'll have to see how the rest of this pans out.

Still not too sure as I'm completely tied up every weekend between now and then anyway.

I'll still be passing through on the weekend of the 18th and once I know times I'll drop you a PM

SB, thanks. I'm having problems with my damm camera...it's not spooling the tape onto the head when I load the tape. It's done this before but not as a constant. !@#$@!#

didn't take many stills but here is one of the group.

I'm the thug on the right.

check the size of the dude kneeling on the front row...he's 6'5, 275. He's just started martial arts and once he gets some time in he's going to be a handfull.

**edit**

btw, we all look grumpy cuz we had spent a late evening celebrating over in Niagara, Canada. :)

so I took a look at the rules, and as far as striking is concerned, the rules seemed to leave alot of rules for interpretation. "no straight punches or kicks to the head" "no strikes intended to damage the opponent" etc. So how did things really play out?

Oso
10-09-2003, 01:39 PM
MK, I dunno. Jes lucky I guess. Thanks.

She is no doubt the coolest chick I've ever met.

fa_jing

the rule set is a bit wonky, imo.

I pulled 2 warnings for striking after I grabbed gi. that and what the ref's don't see, don't count is always in account. One of the guys I fought kept jabbing and caught me with nice hard hook right after one of them and he drew the penalty for the jab but not the hook that certainly moved my head more than the proscribed 'inch'. might have been a tactic on his part because the hook shook me for a bit. still beat him though.

I nailed a guy with a side kick just below the ribs pretty hard and intentionally to take his breath a bit but didn't get called for excessive. He told me after the match that it worked.

JJIF and USJJF are trying really hard to get to the Olympics. I think that is why they are trying to not get an image of a blood and guts sort of thing.

It's basically sport kumite & Judo combined. The stand up may be pretty light but once grip is made it's a full on judo match. Saw some nice throws. If I remember correctly I managed a couple of respectable Osotogari's, 1 Ipponseoinage, and I caught a front kick and stepped through to reap the standing leg whatever that is called.

It's called "Nice throw." ;)

or "not so nice" if their head bounces too much.

:D havn't seen that tape yet but my team mates said that we caught air. Technically I screwed up and fell into his guard. Luckily I was able to escape it for the hold down/pin.

A fantastic victory Big Bear! I`m happy for you and your Sensei, two quality people. Shihan Wilcox must be very proud! What do you think is next? Spain :) Looking forward to our conversations and viewing you in battle.

Oso`s better half is quite a gem. A lovely lady who is inspirational in both her Martial Art`s world and her "art world". These two individuals make a good team, are perfectionists and down-right good folk! Umm, she will hit you, no doubt.

Is Master Mullin`s tournament an annual gig? If so, I would like to bring a group next year, and give some support.

yu shan, thanks for the props.

I am looking at some other grappling tourneys and I think there is one if TN sometime in Nov. Will let you know.

FD, no shizt. This is only my second tourney ever. The first was the Great Lakes Tourney in 2000. Fortunately my team mates and I didn't let each other get psyched out.

It is an annual affair. That would be an awesome honor if you and your students could come up.

lol.
More than the hots, she sounds pretty cool.
I wish I had a woman that liked kung fu and computers and whatnot....
Edit: I just remembered that a good majority of the hot girls from highschool discovered the wonders of beer after graduating.... And are no longer quite so hot, to say the least.
A lot of the girls that werent so hot worked hard to be so. Strange the way things change.

Yea, FD`s got a point. It`s tuff standing in front of a stranger and fighting. But that`s what we train for. That`s where experience comes to play. The more tournament`s you attend and fight, the easier it gets. Then it becomes fun. Trouble is, not many Gong-Fu friendly tournaments in our area. We are interested in tourney`s, send me pm on any CMA rules tournaments.

Thank you Judge Pen, I`ll try and attend out of respect to you and yours.

you guys are beating the moderate out of me.

from now on, I'll focus on dead threads that are non topical, porn, hate and overt cussing at each other.

and of course any thread that makes reference to orange walls with wood paneling will be immediately deleted.

Ok, my camera has broken and Panasonic (who seems to be aware of the problem) says I have to send it back to them for repair.

So, I don't have my two matches against the Canadian guy but I just got the VHS of my other 3 matches and will be taking them to get digitized tomorrow. I don't have a video capture card yet.

More when I know when I get the digital versions back.

btw, I don't look too bad, not too great either but I realized tonight that in 5 matches, I didn't get thrown.

:) couldn't remember details of the very first match except the big punch I took.

which, btw, has been captured well on video, complete with my dazed head shaking afterwards.:)

Ah, you show yourself to be a minnow in the realms of world domination if you rely on unneccessary multiple exclamation marks to emphasise your point. You should be able to strike fear into the minions with a single punctuation!

Like that!

Without having seen the clips (which, as I understand it, is proper form around these parts ;) )

Dude, that's not REAL tai chi. You're too Yang to my Yin, where's your root? I'll bet your lack of lineage really showed up during this fight! That can't be kung fu! That IS kungfu! Your aura is all wrong! If you only knew the secret closed door secrets that I know, then you wouldn't compete! This is too deadly! Stop reverting to kickboxing! Stop reverting to Tai Chee!

Did I miss any? :D

(seriously, I'll take a look at the clips when I get home)

fa_jing
10-21-2003, 02:49 PM
I was able to see the clips. But for some reason, I had to use Windows Media Player and not Quicktime. Looks good, looks like a fun comp format. I was dissapointed that the last clip did not show how the thing ended? Congrats on your win anyway.

fa_jing, sorry, didn't get all of it downloaded off the camera yet.

I didn't get any submissions on him, I think I get one more hold down (exactly like judo afaik except only 20 seconds vs 30 sec).

On the first take down I screwed up by trying to pass his guard on the friggin outside.

I royally screwed up an ipon suinage, I'll try to get that segment captured next.

need more matches so I'm not so jittery and get relaxed.

for you kung fu heads, this format can be done with what you know, if you work throws and ground that is. you just have to learn the don'ts of the format.

Looks good. What were the rules of the comp?

Oso
10-22-2003, 04:20 AM
SK, 5th post from the top has links to the rules.
Basically the same rules as any light contact venue then judo type rules for the throwing and ground work. No striking after the clinch.
