i've seen sakuraba doing the same thing

is the cartwheel anything useful in a situation like that? looks more like a goofy move to me. n dont tell me that was the only way he could get to the guy in the clip on top

...ok looks like passing the guard to either side control or a posted mount (Kwai Sat as we call is in VT) is a much better choice but you can't really deny that it looks sweet... of course if the guy on the ground couldn't get a sweep out of any of that mess... maybe the guy on top just thought he could get away with it, which he did it seems.

got it now.

we call it a star (guard)pass.

it's flash. I've seen it work a few times and I've seen it fail miserably.

Shaolintiger if you don't mind....

What are the situations that you would use the star pass? What would the guard position guy do to make you use this pass? Or is it really just to look sweet?

What ST00 said. We have a gymnast who does it quite well. I can't do it for crap. Then again, I'm more of a pressure guy.

You can do this as the guy sits up. His weight's all wrong to counter.

That doesn't make it high percentage. Then again, the flying triangle isn't high percentage for most people and Genki Sudo finishes lots of people with it.

either way, it cracks me up

MP has put the correct in his spider guard, swept him over and finished him with omoplata

btw: naval academy tournament - this weekend.

Are you all talking about that cartwheel?

it would work well if he landed on his head..:p

another factor would be if the guy in the open guard is fast enough to turn to the side while the other guy flashes over him. and then the cartweeler would end in the same situation again.

yes Abel.

However more commonly though it isn't done from the standing position that we know as a cartwheel.

You often have to put your head down to the mat across his body while controling his arms. The time to do this is when you feel he is using an open guard and has relaxed the contact around your hips, legs.

Most often you will usually go from in the guard to side control, but occasionally (as MP said/knows) if he sits up you can flip right over and the rear mount control.

The Star Pass has a lot of variations to it.
