Acupuncture usually helps right away while someone is having a migraine or other headache. I don't know how well it works for preventing them in the future. Usually herbs are needed for chronic problems (the length of time needed to take the herbs depends on how long one has had the condition; a month of herbs per year of illness is a fair guideline), and are prescribed based on differential diagnosis of the headache pattern. Details about the nature of the headache, for example location, quality of pain, what makes it better or worse, etc. as well as other constitutional signs/symptoms determine the diagnosis and herbal formula.

Here are just a couple of patterns to give you an idea:

Liver Yang Rising Headache: Triggered or aggravated by anger/stress, pain on one/both side(s) of the head/temples/eyebrow area, can be accompanied by nausea, pain feels "bursting" or "pulsating", usually feels better sitting up, visual disturbances possible, accompanying symtoms may include: tinnitus, insomnia, irritability.

Liver Qi stagnation headache: usually located on forehead/temples, occurs with food-retention, "aching" pain, triggered by anxiety/stress, headache may move from side to side, accompanying symtoms may include: hypochonriac pain, nervous tension, poor digestin, gas, bloating.

Acupuncture definately can make the pain of an acute migraine go from 10 to a 5 . Treatments between attacks will help you to feel the pain of migraines decrease from frequent to infrequent to felt no more. With acute headaches from Qi constraint, attacks of wind heat or wind cold, acupuncture can make a 10 go down to a 0 or a two. Migraines are generally due to pathologies of the root which takes longer to treat, the root impling problems regarding the zhang organs-lungs, percardium, heart, spleen, liver, kidneys.
Go to one of those practicing acupuncturists in Pittsburg and they can definately determine your pattern, determine the proper herbs, and acupuncture points and your migraines will be helped.
