I have been working security out at the local halloween haunted house - "Trail of Terror" in Shakopee, Minnesota. When we are escorting naughty-doers around site one of us walks in front, one of us walks behind to keep an eye on the people we are escorting.
We had some problems with a guy who was underaged, and drinking and trying to sneak onto the grounds without paying. Normally we would have called his parents and had them pick him up, but he was with freinds and they were going to watch him. Well his freinds bought tickets and went inside, he kept trying to sneak in. We pulled beer off of him and he informed us his freinds also had beer on them, a double whammy in our book for bringing liquor onto the premises, but also all being underaged. We went to get his freinds and found them across site, and as per usual operating procedure, walked them to the front gate, me in back.
We are walking two guys, they are walking on in front and to the left, the guy in back is to the right almost dirctly in front of me. We have a fireman walking to the left of them (The fire crew helps us out since all of them are atleast 6'1" 250 lbs or so) the security guy in the front and I am in th back following at about 10 feet.
The guy in back reaches into his pocket. Typically those who are drunk tend to want to smoke as well and so they often go for cigarettes or whatever, and we don't sweat it too much. I was watching him and saw him start to remove something from his jacket pocket which at first appeared to be a beer can. He got it free of his jacket and it turned out to be a black pistol of some sort, it appeared to me to be a glock.
I hit him from behind at full tilt, sort of picking him up and slamming him to the ground. The gun flew from his hand immediately. I slammed him to the ground then pinned his arms behind him and we cuffed him while the fire guy held onto his buddy.
We found out later it was a pellet gun and he claims he was trying to dump it in case we called the cops. He says he didn't know I was behind him.

yep, the adrenaline surge hit and I just moved. It is interesting to look back on it now. Some people say situations like that seem to slow down for them. For me it all happened so fast I didn't have time to think about it at all. I have no idea what I would have done after I got him to the ground if he still had it in his hand. I think my plan was to pin his arm to the ground with my knee after we hit. He didn't fight much, I think mostly out of shock and like I said, he claims he was just going to drop it.

On the lighter side, the cop shook my hand. I told him my story when he got there for his report and he shook my hand. Said it was quick thinking because it could have been real. he said if it were him he probably would have shot the guy. I had to laugh since that option wasn't one of mine!

He's lucky you weren't a cop. He might have gotten shot rather than tackled.

Is Trail of Terror at Valley Fair, or separate?

Tak, it's actually held on the Rennaissance Festival grounds. not far from Valley Fair though.

That whole night was pretty crazy actually, as we were heading down to the hay ride to grab some employees for smoking pot, on the job no less and in public, we had to turn around and respond to a porta-john that had caught on fire! Someone had lit the tissue paper while they were waiting in line for the hayride.

oooh, Tak is hitting on a sensitive subject with me....

NP, you have no idea. Working security out at the Renfest and the Trail realy gives you a lower opinion on humanity. The weird stuff people do because they think it's funny at the time.

Yeah... cops like to shoot people.

it would have sucked in this particular situation, but can you blame them?

"The weird stuff people do because they think it's funny at the time."

When I was 8-16 or so.. I was a security guards worst nightmare.
Some people are really stupid about where they smoke... Itll teach them a lesson not to get high publicly.

"it would have sucked in this particular situation, but can you blame them?"
Sure can. How many times to people get shot pulling out their wallets? (its a rhetorical question, it should never happen)
Toy weapons are prevolent in society. Little fockers around here have em all the time, and I already know some 10 year old is going to wind up getting shot by some rookie cop because of it.
