Greetings my friends,

How do I practice dodging fast and reflexes?
I know it is good to avoid a heavy powerful punch rather than getting hurt! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

thanks,

"It is better to have abscence of body than presence of mind"-O Sensei Ueshiba

I love that quote.

The best way to practice the bob and weave dodging, or even foowork dodging/off angling is to have a partner throw strikes at you. Pay close attention to the first movement of the striking limb, usually the shoulders and hips. Just start with one punch drills, working off the jab, them move to combinations and set ups.

Ouch, no physical body to study with will really slow you down. Find somebody. There are all sorts of little simple machines you can set up, but nothing even comes close to a live body.
Start with your classmates, but find someone that is willing to hit you. Any exes?

try shadow boxing or throw punches ,kicks whatever in front of mirror then react to them, just a few things since we cant always have a partner, in front of the mirror you will be surprised to find how many mistakes you make with "body language", there are walking drills in kung fu for this but to hard to explain by typing

There really is no substitute, in my opinion, for a partner for this. There are many martial arts skills that can be practiced solo, but this is definitely not one of them. If you don't practice this in class already, ask your instructor if you can. Also, get some friends from class to come over on the weekends and practice. Just remember, start slow, unless of course you feel like getting whacked alot.

get a long pole and have it horizontal and mounted somewhere, the start at one end, bob and weave as you come up under the stick do a upper cut and the do it the other side all the way to the end of the stick and then go backwards. :)

get a ball or big fishing sinker and tie it to fishing line from the ceiling, at head hit and swing it the dodge as it comes forwards then as it comes backwards dodge it again, head and shoulder movement add punches if ya want!

Something my instructor advides me to do.

When you are at home watching TV, block, dodge, duck, or punch every time the camera angle or scene changes. These changes are very difficult, and sometimes impossible to predict in a show, movie, or commercial you have never seen before. Now doing this will not teach you specifically how to dodge, but it will sharpen your reflexes and reaction time to the best they can posibaly be. That in and of itself will help you to get out of the way of a strike.

Just my 2 cents

Assumption is the mother of tragedy. Just keep and open mind and be ready

Wow, that's a really good idea. It never occured to me. I gotta try that one out at home, thanks.

Make three marks on the wall or in the air. Remembr you might need the wall clean , make the marks only dark enought the see in regular light. point at the two end dots with your nose. not by turning your head, but by backing up then moving to that side, then moving forward. You will find this action draws a letter U.Try this exercise with your neck as the pivot, or your waist. whatever is the pivot all above is kept straight~, locked in place for training.~ When fighting, whatever whatever. (standing or sitting)

Throw a bouncy ball against a wall indoors. stand back only as far as is you barely avoiding getting hit the firs time. A super ball is best for this; next might be a handball.

Dance a two step. Weight shifting from foot to foot of spread feet can move you enough to keep from getting hit immediately. Face forward and sometomes with eithr shoulder leading. Later combine the shifting with the shoulder leading. you have just missed the attack on you~.

Very some such, perhaps might have been, likely say some, some not.
