Considering that there are many branches to the Hung Ga tree (altho the WFH Canton Hung Ga is the most well known), if someone does/teaches something called Southern Shaolin, and says it's Hung Ga derived or is a Hung Ga branch, how do you know? What particular or distinguishing features should one look for? Are these featrues universal for all southern shaolin systems or are they particular to Hung Ga?

The teacher, if not also the students should be fairly tough, and in decent shape for starters. Look for low stancework at least part of the time, a lot of conditioning of the limbs and hands. Classes should have people making sounds as they do many of the strikes. Look for the Rules somewhere on virtue, morality etc. That is off the top of my head.

Trademark techniques: Low sweeps and kicks, forward motion more often than retreating, using the arms as bridges as well as using them to tear through the other persons defenses whether they attack or just stand there. Depending on knowledge level of students..some crane techniques..Tiger stuff tends to be there a lot earlier. Also, people training with Iron/Brass rings.

Hung is hung...once you see the art combined with the mentality, its very easy to recognize..much like how hsing-I is very recognizable, but with a different flavor.
