Why are elbows allowed in MMA and not Thai boxing?

Also I heard that in the chinese domestic bouts of sanda knees are allowed. Are elbows also allowed? and why aren't knees used in international san shou bouts?

Does this have more to do with the state athletic commisions than the promoters/sport?

I don't understand why states that would allow MMA, wouldn't allow elbows in Thai boxing.

Isn't it important to have more unified rules for sanda if it's going to take off as a sport? If the chinese allow knees shouldn't other countries too?

Also has anybody heard of any sanda that uses elbows and knees?

No elbows in Thaiboxing? I think it is amateur Muay Thai that has no elbows, because elbows are definately trained in muay thai, many different kinds of elbow strikes, over and down, upwards and forwards like an uppercut, horizontal elbows, spinning back elbows, etc.

bb -- he's not talking about proper lumpinee competitions, but rather the ones in the states. apparently there's inconsistency in among tourneys on what different states' athletic commissions will allow.

Yeah, I remember my Muay thai trainer/kru commenting about how they'll let you climb up a dangerous avalanche mountain, but they won't let you throw an elbow in a muay thai bout. I guess I didn't read the thread carefully enough

bb -- it's not that they won't let you throw a dangerous elbow. it's that they won't let someone else EAT that elbow, the same elbow you've been working your ass of at for the past few years. it's just too easy to get focked up with a good elber.

Where do most knees end up? To a heavily armored body.

Where do most elbows end up? The thin skin of the face.

Its all about keeping the fight going. Nuttins says Game Over like a nice elbow sandwich.

I think it's weird that some states have NHB but won't allow elbows in Muay Thai.

I think some states like Nevada and Cali are starting to allow elbows but with a pad on the elbow.

Even in Bangkok the elbow is becoming frowned upon (according to Sidai who've been there for the fights). It's not actually a case of state comissions. The international rules for the WMTO don't allow them (I think).

we practice elbows at muay thai but we dont use them in sparring. with good reason too, an elbow can really make someones face resemble a car wreck.
