That's not nearly the sure fire method your friend seems to think it is. Alot of viruses pull addresses out at random, or copy everything after the @ and start making up it's own addresses.

The best way to protect yourself from these is good antivirus software and consistantly updating it. Usually within about 8-12 hours after a virus has hit updates become available.
