looking for specific TCM ingredient

does anyone know whether 'black sugar' is in referenece to black cane sugar, which is found in asia, or black sugar maple, which is found in the US and Canada? my guess would be the cane variety as this ingredient is for a TCM prescription....but TCM has also embraced herbs ad plants from many other cultures, so i can't be positive.
