I tried to place an ad in the magazine "Self Defense for Women". I was told that they stopped publishing it. What a sad situation. I hope some women activist group may start a magazine soon. I will contribute articles and write books for them.

I may be wrong, women needs self defense more than any other people. Any thoughts?

proper self defense is important for everyone, most especially women and others that are at a higher risk. Any woman I date, I try to convince them to let me teach them a thing or two.

Training for self defense is a dead end anyway.

I disgree with Rogue. However it must be put into context and addressed on all levels. Too often it's offered by someone who doesn't really understand the issues involved. It's not about strikes, punching, grappling, kicking, it's about staying away from areas you don't need to be, getting escorts when possible, environmental awareness, how to use a gun, having a cell phone on hand and ready if need be, and a myriad of other things. Physical techniques should be at the bottom of the list of things to learn and those should be practifced regularly

Rogue is correct, especially as it pertains to the subject at hand.

I think Rogue and Watchman are half-right...

If you train for common situations, realistically and keep everything in context, such training can HELP. However, it's not a guarantee and one's chances of survival decrease signifgantly when the attacker is armed.

This isn't to say that women shouldn't train to protect themselves, quite the opposite, but as red5angel said, a hand-to-hand fight should be the last resort for either gender if it can be avoided.

Thanks Watchman. Red, let me explain why in my opinion training for self defense is a dead end. This is based on experince from helping a friend out with his self defense classes.

You are training for a goal that more than likely will not happen, and if it does you have little control over how it happens. Think about that, you're training for something unknown with little real world feedback in how you're doing reaching that vague goal. With so many variables what do you train? How do you stay motivated in training except for fear and paranoia? If your goal is to avoid pain and suffering why go through pain and suffering in training to avoid pain and suffering? The answer is people don't and tend to drop out without having a real immediate threat to themselves to drive them. The person who is motivated to compete or motivated to achieve a mastery of an art will find reasons to train.

If physical techniques should be at the bottom of the list of things to learn why should they be practiced regularly? Isn't that a waste of time? Physical training for self defense gets a bad rap, after all most self defense is about physical protection.

A good classical martial arts school or sport oriented school will challenge a person physically and mentally to overcome limits and to help them think on their feet. And those are things that are most important to make work environmental awareness, how to use a gun, or a cell phone to call for help.

Rogue has taken back the other half of the correct which I selfishly hid, and has eaten it, like unto a delicious cookie...

Sorry, I'm new at the whole correct thing. Was that right?

Actually, that was a pretty good one
