Hey,

I was just wondering if there is any mantis equivilent of Tai Chi's push hands, or Wing Chun's chi sao?

Any help would be great.. thanks

Well, the answer is yes and no.

There are many PM styles out there and the methodologies vary drastically. While it is not widely known that such drills exsit in mantis, there are a few branches of mantis that capitalize on similar methodologies as Taiji's push hands (learning the peng lu ji an) and Wing Chun's Chi Sao (learning the tan bong fuk).

The simplest method in mantis is hook grab pluck drill or Zhan Nian (stick and adhere)

The other more sophisticated method is what I would call Black tiger steals heart drill.

Even more sophisticated is Ying Ching Po Shou (Pai An) that involves the dodging, turning, leaping and shifting.

But then 7 Stars lineage might prefer to use Ling forms to suppliment that. So...

Anyway, there are plenty of methods and drills to achieve the same goal.

In the WHF lineage, we use all of the methods Mantis108 has described. In every class, students practice the hook, grab, pluck drill as a warm up to other sahn sao practice. In the Intermediate level classes, Pahk Awn is part of their warm up exercises as well. Ling form practice is only one of many partner exercises we do. For most of our classes, partner drills make up the bulk of class time and students constantly change partners to practice with different size opponents.
