bjj n00b question

I had to stop going to my MMA class cuz I moved to start my new job.

What is a "sweep?" I hear about it all the time but I don't think I ever learned anything by that name. I think it has something to do with grabbing the guy's legs when you have him in guard?

A sweep is any technique that moves a guy from on top of you to the mat.

CSN is correct in a broad sense. Usually "sweeps" refers specifically to moves from guard that end with you on top. I believe BJJ.org should have some pictorials.
