Have you seen this article yet? (http://www.emptyflower.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi/YaBB.cgi?board=Xing;action=display;num=1081945993)

It has some good pics of a few SC grips.

So you guys have all of those? cool. I've not seen covr hand or arm locking anywhere but SC myself. How do you guys use those 2?

"kicking to the head is the same as punching at the enemy's toe"
Great quote. Never really thought of it like that.

...
But crocop gives good example of why kicking to the head works.

Cool aikido locks!

instead of whacking them in cover hands, you can go a no gi tai otoshi or yama arashi - you just go to their shoulder instead. or into collar and elbow or neck surround...

i prefer to use an arm drag off cover hands, however.

arm locking leads to several set-ups and a few one-armed throws. you have to understand that we don't go for the elbow joint though. illegal!

Meat Shake

elbow locks are illegal in judo tournies?

Edit: from my understanding, any lock (except small joints) is allowed in shuai chiao tournies, as long as its used in conjunction with a throw.

Merryprankster
04-16-2004, 11:02 AM
you can't target the joint during a throw.

OK, I think you misunderstood how to use cover hands. It CAN be a strike, but here's how I learned it.

Grab the gi at the wrist with your left hand. Grab the gi at the bicep with your right hand. Jam the right elbow into where the pec meets the shoulder. You use your right elbow tip as a fulcrum to move the guy around.

Merryprankster
04-16-2004, 11:11 AM
oh, it looked like an elbow strike in the picture.

but yeah, you and i are talking about the exact same thing. Rhadi sent me flying with that grip.

st00 uses it for his yama arashi.

i should also point out that because we can't target the elbow, in either wrestling or judo, arm locking is a fleeting transitory thing. you get it, you go, or it's trouble.

WD - you ever use butterfly hands to get to neck surrounding?
Do you guys primarily focus on jacket wrestling?

same deal in SC. Next time you can get one, don't think submission. Instead, think turn the waist and PULL with the arm that has the elbos and sweep him out as he goes past you.

I haven't seen Butterfly Hands yet. We're focusing on the jacket now because of BJJ. when I get to San An, I'll focus on whatever Kirk gives me.

no no, that's how we use it too. i was thinking that since you can target the elbow, maybe you'd follow him around more. obviously not!

http://www.judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/yamaarashi.htm

see the top animation - cover hands. it's just a tad higher grip than what you described, but it IS an animated gif.
i've had it done several times on my biceps.

let me guess - butterfly hands is when you bring both arms inside the opponents two armed grab for you, and then make the appropriate deflection to either side as you move in for (insert tie-up here)?

A lot of these actions appear very similiar to some of the ones you will find in Wing Chun- although of course at close range and human physiology being what it is maybe that nots surprising.

Wing chun has a lot of good unbalancing techniques- virtually all of them working off of control and manipulation of the nearest/attacing elbow- either pulling down at a 45 degree gradient or pushing up at a 45 degree gradient.

god forbid we're all doing the same things, with different emphases, under different names! that would just be awful! :D

I like thinking what I do is special and unique better. It's so much of an ego boost that way to think that only i have super secret squirrel skills!

Nick Forrer

In wing chun there is a saying

'loy lau, hoi song, lat sau jik chung'

roughly translated it means if they push you- pull them, if they pull you- push them and if they dont do either smash the f_uck out of them.

dont know how effective it would be against squirrels though:(
