How can you be a non-drinker when you drink red wine? Kinda like saying you are celibate but will shag on weekends :D

I wouldn't bet on that. Red wine can be good for you, but not drinking it is not bad for you either ;)

1. Antioxidants can be found in a number of foods, and are probably more useful in staving off cancer than the red wine itself (even though red wine is supposed to be high in antioxidants). They also say that regular ejaculation staves off prostate cancer in men, but it doesn't mean I am going to be jacking off every 5 minutes.

2. It is difficult to either confirm nor refute this. I am sure this is what have been taught, however my sifu told us that the only alcohol that is 'good' for your qi is brandy/cognac and that all other alcohol should be taken in moderation.

3. Can you give me more info on this? Articles if possible.

4. This cannot really be proven.

I am not trying to be a pr!ck here. I am genuinely interested in any information you have on the subject.

Why not? Red5 siad it's been working for him...

When she said detox properties, I'm thinking she meant antioxidants, which you had already addressed. That's not unique to only red wine though.

Antioxidants. Also found in just about anything containing vitamin C.

2. promotes certain qiWhy?

How?

3. unique detox found in no other substanceAntioxidants. Also found in just about anything containing vitamin C. The only other thing you could be referring to is tannin, also found in Western tea and a few other things like rosehips, gingko...

4. because nearly every person who has lived over 100yr old...does this dailyYou're making this up as you go along aren't you? Japan has the highest percentage of centenarians (and let's face it, in most countries it wouldn't even register as a percentage!) and approximately a third of Japanese people don't drink alcohol due to a genetic indisposition, and those who do mostly drink nihonshu (sake) or shochu. Sake is supposed to be good for you in moderation. Shochu would have killed Lee Marvin quicker. They do not drink red wine in any quantity, if at all.

The correct has once again squirted on your face and left the building before morning.

Reasons not to drink red wine:

1. It's nasty

But I'm just getting into wine now, and the only ones I've liked have both been whites (Riesling and Viognier<sp>). Every red wine I've tried has been nasty, as in like, I would have to force myself to drink it, and most of the whites (chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, etc.) weren't very good either.

Maybe I'll like it more as I age.

Will someone help me here?

I remember reading that the consumption of grape juice or red grape juice is as good for the prostate as red wine is and it is a lot cheaper. And it still has those antioxidant properties.

IF, red wine is an acquired taste but once you acquire it you will never look back. Get yourself a good cab sauv and drink it while eating a good steak - one of life's greatest pleasures :)

BL, I do not doubt that drinking red wine is beneficial for your health. My only problem is with your contention that not drinking it is detrimental to your health ;).

So this does not imply that not drinking red wine is detrimental to your health?

As for the steak, I only ever said it was for pleasure not for health. Given that the vast majority of the population drink wine for pleasure rather than health, I thought it was a valid statement to make. Forgive me if I am mistaken.

I don't want to get into a p!ssing match about this. I have a genuine interest in the subject and, in particular, would like to find out what you know about the TCM POV wrt. red wine as it differs from what I have been taught. If you cannot be bothered enlightening me on the subject then that is fine - just say so. :)

joedoe

OK, I will assume you just can't be bothered to enlighten me on what you know on the subject. That is fine. :) However, please don't assume that because I am asking you about what you know on the subject that it means I know nothing on the subject.

FWIW my father is an acupuncturist - I typed up every paper he had to write to gain his qualifications and spent a lot of time reading his textbooks. While I do not claim to be knowledgeable about TCM, I do know something of it.

Further, I shared a house with a naturopath for 3 years and spent much time learning about the human body and the effects of herbs and chemicals from him. Again, while I do not claim any expertise I have some knowledge of the field.

I also read quite extensively and try to keep abreast of the latest medical research (my interest is usually focused on asthma as I suffer quite badly from it, however matters of general wellbeing interest me). From what I know of the research into red wine, the main benefits of red wine consumption come from the antioxidants contained within red wine.

If you want to talk about the detox qualities of various foods, many food can have a detox effect of various different organs - for example mung beans.

As for the claim of most centenarians having drunk red wine regularly, completely not provable. Unless you can show the study you drew that from and the methodology they used in the study then that statement is pure conjecture.

Well, since I don't drink red wine very often I'd better go back to jerking off :D

I have done the rounds of the medical specialists. Started off with a respiratory specialist (to assess my asthma more fully), then went to an ear/nose/throat specialist (to see if my sinus problems are aggravating my asthma), then to an immunologist (to check for allergies and possibly desensitisation therapy), and now the immunologist doubts the diagnosis (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) of the first respiratory specialist and is sending me to another respiratory specialist for a second opinion. So, after tomorrow I will find out just how screwed I am. :)

I am stuck in a bit of a catch-22 because there is a suspicion that my sinuses are making my asthma worse and require surgery, however my lung function is currently so poor that no surgeon would operate on me :(

Anyway, back on topic :)
