club bells seem expensive. im thinking about getting a sledge hammer as a cheap alternative. are there any major advantages of getting a club bell over a sledge hammer?

Yes, but a sledge hammer will do in terms of strengthen grip/wrist strength. You won't be able to to all "clubbell" exercises but you can be equally as creative with a sledge hammer. I'd advise against some of the more ballistic movements of clubbell swinging because of space limitations (sledge hammer would require HIGH ceilings) and I'd hate to whack myself with a sledge hammer. Ouch!

Check out this cheap alternative:

I purchased the 15lb clubbells but I didnt get the video yet. I will tho when I steal, i mean, get more cash. LOL. My forearms and shoulders were dang sore after I messed around with it.

Mm. I bought a set of Olympic size Bulldog collars in my last Ironmind order. I'm gonna get a 2' length of pipe and make my own Heavy Hammer II. Similar concept to clubbells. I imagine it will turn out like the one in Ford's link, although without tapered weights like a clubbell.

Oh rock on, are those those little kids wiffle bats filled with sand and weight? Is that his substitute? Haha that's clever as hell. Um, except for the one with the weights on it. That's not a bat.

It's awesome how he tells you what it weighs if you fill it with each.

And 80lbs of tire weights for $5 at the tire store? Holy crap!!! That's cheap! You could make all kinds of weights with those.

Um, oh yeah, what benefit do you get from clubbells? They seem like everything would be very shoulder intensive, which I don't want. Describe some exercises for me.

Some of that guy's kettlebells (http://www.geocities.com/fightraining/kettle.html) don't look like they have enough room for your fingers to fit through, much less for you to hold it and flip it over your hand like at the top of snatches.

Toby,

I have the leverage bar from ironmind and bulldog collars, but I still don't feel safe swinging that sucker around. Just something to think about.

Iron,

They are great for grip work, shoulder girdle and trunk stability. They really force you to tighten up and hit your "stabalizers" (I hate using that word) to protect you against injury.

i spent my whole lunch break looking for some hollow plastic baseball bats and all i could find were solid or foam ones!

i think the club bells help strengthen all the liitle pockets of weak spots in your wrists, elbows, shoulders and grip strength.

they might make ur hands stronger and bigger...but u don't want that either do u ironfist? :)

Ford,

I'll be using them as HHII's, not as clubbells, so no swinging, or very slow. It'll be mainly supplementary to my current grip stuff which is wrist rollups and COC #1 and #2's. I too would be doubtful of swinging them around, unless I welded the Bulldogs in place, in which case I could do it cheaper by welding the weights themselves in place.

Insofar as it's a heavy weight at the end of a cylindrical tube (http://www6.mailordercentral.com/ironmind/prodinfo.asp?number=1255&variation=&aitem=32&mitem=39) :). Reason why it might be better than a sledgehammer? Diameter of the handle. I'm going for a 2" handle, which matches my Olympic Bulldogs and Olympic plates. You could make one with standard weight diameter handles. Dunno off the top of my head what diameter that is. I guess you'd end up with something more like this one.
