Hi,

I study northern praying mantis, but have done a little Japanese swordfighting in my time. Soon i will start to learn the northern mantis straightsword techniques. Does anyone know how they compare? Any advice at all?

The japanese sword is very powerful whereas the chinese sword is elagant. The techniques in the straight sword are more intricate and advanced. The japanese sword's footwork is also different, you will find the straight swords footwork much more difficult than the Japanese swords.
Both are good and encourage the use of both weapons as they are both effective, though in my opinion it takes longer to be proficient at the chinese sword because with it you do not block, you attack n move/attack.

straight sword fighting seems more like fencing.
