I just read that pa kua is ba gua is this true.I thought they were diffrent styles.

The way to properly pronounce it in Cantonese would be
"baat gwa" jeurng not "pa kwa". Baat is eight as in eight triagram palm.

You might have been thinking of pigua which is pek kwar in cantonese.

Isn’t it 8 triagram Formation? Zhang (Mandarin) used here is not the same as Zhang for palm. Same Zhang as used in the military sense.

before the "pin yin " system that china came p with, there was the wade-giles system. chinese words that start with "b" usually started with a "p" in W-G, and words that sounded like "G" were written with a "K". also "z" was "Ch" dont ask me why.

therefore "ba gua zhang or ba gua chuan (boxing/fist)" was written as "pa kua chang, pa kua chuan".

i dont know baout cantonese, for my family is from taiwan.
