Hi everyone,

Just interested to know how many hours per week do you spend time on training wing chun?
also how much time is spent on drilling and how much time is spent on "sparring" and chi sao?

I try and do some form of training every day so it works out at about 14+ hours a week

The best thing you can do is get a regular training partner about the same level as you and just practice drills over and over.

Also a wooden dummy is an essential training aid.

In terms of ratios I do about 80% drills (mainly incorporated into chi sau and bong lap) to 20% free chi sau/sparring.

IMV too many people neglect basic drills because sparring is more fun. However wing chun is all about the basics- I have met people with 15+ years of wing chun who still couldn't do basic actions (like bong sau) correctly.

Also IMV a couple of half assed sessions a week wont get you far. When Ip mans first crop of students were learning they practiced 6 hrs a day 6 days a week.

One last thing- I notice some people spend a significant portion of their training socialising with others- I try and save that for before and after class- not during.
