Hi,

As you probably now I am new to Wing CHun but can't wait to get started with it :)

Now I read a lot of articles/posts about that "root" stuff. Now since it sais you learn developping it starting from the beginning and the easy stuff like being able to resist pressure when people try to push you over is fairly simple (that's what it said in the article) I wondered how I should get started to learn to develop it.

Anybody could tell me step by step what to do to find that root energy which would make me as stable as a 6-legged horse ? :)
An online article would be cool too.

THANKS !

You practice Wing Chun ? COntact me on my icq ! 71470721(my name there is "vision")

 It doesn't GIVE you rootedness. Nothing gives you rootedness. It helps you develop it.

It prevents one from cheating one's way into the Pigeon Toe Stance.

WhippingHand~I dont think you should ever stop doing SLT slowly.
You didnt say that, but you said "at first".
My sifu said you can go faster once you get better, but I think you should go slow all the time...think about it,ALT is at its best when done slowly...very very slowly...Why would you want it any other way?

Tzu`Chan~Do your Sil Lum Tao,do it slowly, and remain relaxed and in a good stance...you will find your rooting there...

I do the SLT, as well as all other forms, in many different ways.

Well, how do you do your forms differently?

I do Chum Kui slow sometimes just to make sure I am doing everything correctly...

Hey,what do you think about standing on one leg and doing slt?

I do them at various speeds. I vary the movements in them.

SLT on 1 leg? I don't do it, but I may consider it one day. It seems useful.

I don't train WC anymore (partly because I prefer lower stances), but when I did I tried to sink my qi and stances as much as possible.

Do Siu Lum Tao and focus your intent on your dantien, Tzu'Chan.

WH~My sifu said it can help you with your stance work and kicking.
I dont look at it as much but I told him I would try it durring this weekend...

If you were thinking of asking...Joe,you dont look at stance work and kicking that much?
Well no that isnt the case,I just think I can get the stance work doing my forms in a normal stance and kicks by practicing them in the air or on something...

By the way...Do you ever do air punches very very slow?
I was thinking about doing kicks that way...what do you think?

And if your opponent doesn't let you...?

Martial Joe

That would take alot of time.
I am also wrestling and I plan on getting good.
If I guy grabbed my leg and didnt let it down I would just stomp towards the ground.
If that didnt work then I would wrestle him untill I get out of it so I could try to pound him...Wrestling is known for its great stand up grappling capabilities...
If I couldnt do any of that I guess hes better then me...(that is the part when I loose)

You are more experienced then me obviously and most likely a hell of alot better.
You seem to be smart.
Do you know of other ways?
I was thinking punching the guy but scratch that...I think I would rather pay full attention to getting my leg back on the ground...

The reason you want to get that leg down, as quickly as possible, is because you are more than likely, as most Wing Chun people are, not confident when only one leg is on the ground. That's how exercises, such as SLT with one leg up, become a very useful tool, as well as others.

Martial Joe

Sorry but I have to disagree with you...
I feel that confidence isnt the reason you wouldnt want to be on one leg.I think that it is because you are left vonurable for a take down and your just not where you want to be due to the dangers of its stability...

Don't take my words too literally... True "confidence" is knowing you can stand on one leg, and still be stable. If you do not have that stability, then you won't be confident in that position. Let me rephrase: Most Wing Chun people are not "stable" with one leg up.

(just like in the "Wing Tsun" thread pictures.)
This is why most practitioners don't kick, they're too afraid...

This is why outsiders feel WC kicks are weak...
because for the most part, they are!!!

Martial Joe

I guess I am agreeing with you then...

But on the kicks are weak part...
They dont seem weak to me.

Well I am tired, bye for now...

Define a weak kick. The kicks we practice are far from being weak. I guess if one doesn't learn to kick or practice, then their kick would be weak
or they may be too indecisive in trying to kick.

We are talking about rooting are we?...The stance in the first form is there to help you find it.The second form will help you to move around without loosing it.All motions will come from the ground. ;)

When done correctly.... they are very strong.

Many people take kicks for granted, just lifting their leg and throwing it forward, without having the stability beforehand.

(Perfect example on the Wing Tsun thread)

Martial Joe, you are missing a very important point. Training SNT on 1 leg strengthens your leg, helps develop your root, and in essence prepares you to attempt chi gerk or sticky leg and moy ying gerk(no shadow kicks) while your hands are engaged with your opponent lopping, paking, lop-faking, etc. Haven't you ever tried lop da with a tie gerk? You are on 1 leg and after the groin strike, you could kick either knee or both.
