'pikeys' is a derogatory term for travellers or gypsies (also called knackers). They are mainly from Ireland, but there are quite a few on the mainland (England). They travel around the country in caravans and set up camp in farmers fields and village greens/commons. They make their living in the main from cash in hand casual labour (some alledge that a portion of their income comes from crime/benefit fraud). Because they are often disliked by local communitys they learn to be tough from a very young age- boxing being an important part of their culture. One of the guys i went to school with came from a traveller family and he was the toughest guy at school, not because he was the best fighter but because he would always take someone on no matter how much bigger they were and he wouldnt ever give up.

If you want to know about bareknuckled boxing in the UK check out the story of a guy called lenny maclean- he was the bare knuckle champ at one point and a big underworld figure in Britain.
