Does spm have a strong defence angainst an assailant
who attacks with chain punches in a straight blast manner.
aimed at the body or face

{wingtsun style chain punches}

Yes, you can use the basic blocking technique called Moi Shu that blocks the opponent's arm at the elbow and redirects the power from there. That is a very basic skill you develop in mantis. Mantis punches are similar to those of WT but mantis prefers the phoenix eye (also called dragon fist) vs the closed fist of WT. The blocking is the same for both punches becuase the blocking technique is not effected by the form of the fist.

x-warrior is correct for the most part but note-
Some wing chun lines do have the phoenix eye-there are slight differences in the details here and there in forming the eye in several styles.
Well known-
Ip man taught the phoenix eye in Foshan.

The chain punching is for development- how it is used will vary.
