It was good. Lots of fun. met Gene and D0rkface. will post videos and clips later on. i just got home about 20 minutes ago. I will post clips of some of the forms online. the houston students impressed me the most next were the manhatten Shi Goulin people. And for how long Li Peng has been in the USA, he ahs a pretty big following already.

*edit
we left the tournament early on saturday because the tai chi wasnt all that great. we headed down into manhatten and went to chinatown then went to see one of my Sifu's old teacher SHi Yan Ming, but he wasnt there. I was never in the school before, and if I didnt have my sifu there to shwo me, i would have never found it. We stayed for about 15 minutes to watch and all they did was the wubuchuan/chan (sp??) form.

master demostration I couldnt film. Yee's Hung Gar did a good lion dance in the begining. then they had some demo's there was a tang soo do school there demoing which i think everyone found entertaining. but the show picked up when two of the houston kids came out and did the little kid form with all the wierd disfiguring stretching. those kids (about 4/5) i think stole the show. the moinks performed excellent too.

that is all I have to say. will post links to pictures later in a day or so.

There was one other Shaolin monk - Shi Yanshang. He was the big monk in full robe next to Guolin. I'm very interested in him - he's supposed to be really good, but it's the first time I met him.

It was a small event, but quite fun for Shaolin family. It was great to see so many old friends and make some new ones. Definately one of the most laid-back tournaments I've ever been too, almost like in internal school event. But I don't want to give too much away either ;) look for the write up in our Jan/Feb 2005 issue, on stands in Dec 2004.

BTW, SLL, you look great in that got qi? (http://store.martialartsmart.net/tshirgotqi99.html) shirt.

Gene,

Thanks for the update. Whos Yanshang? Is he doing something at Guolins school or is he just visiting? Guolin's got Justin and Hengshan teaching at his school right?

Gene,

Is it the same Yanshang that did Guolins Kwandao video?

Premier79
07-26-2004, 11:51 AM
If it's the same ShiYanChang, didn't get that good of a look at the tournament, that I'm thinking about, then he already has his own place but so far he's only teaching internal arts. This is his website.

One letter can make all the difference just like one stroke in Chinese calligraphy...or swordsmanship.

Yanchang is a different monk than Yanshang. Yanchang came over early, one of the first, in fact. Yanshang just came over. I think Tsingtao is right - it is the same monk in the Kwandao video (http://store.martialartsmart.net/vidshaolkunk1.html). Like I said, it was the first time I met him, as well as the first time I met Goucan (Justin) and Shaolinlueb, for that matter. It was also the first time that I have seen Yanfeng since 1998. Quite the Shaolin gathering really. I had a lot of fun.

Dear Mr. GeneChing:

It was a pleasure meeting you this weekend and sharing the many stories you have to tell about Shao-Lin. I hope that you found some of my discussion enlightening, as well. I appreciate your keeping secret the secrets of the Dim Mak Seminar, until which time they can be revealed. It was nice to meet and spend time with Shi Xing Ying, Shi Yan Feng, LiPeng Zhang, Shi Guocan, Shi Yanshang and Shi Guolin as well. Although I am always amazed by the skill of these monks, I have never been intimidated. However, in meeting Shi Guolin for the first time, I must say that his imposing nature smacked me right in the jaw!

I, too, had a chance to meet with several old friends who perhaps should have been competing, and would likely have done very well, I might add, had circumstances been different. As I had to foster the growth of my inner child, I was unable to attend Sunday's festivities. Meanwhile, per our discussion, I will have the facts of my work on your desk tomorrow morning.

Sincerely,

dimmakseminar

KL: I assure that I'm all natural. No extensions, no silicon, no steriods. That beely of mine has been cultivated by many hard hours of beer drinking. ;)

DMS: We missed you on Sunday. I was hoping to get you into the 'fomrum members' shot, but then black out your face like a porn star to keep your identity concealed. That would have been fun. I'm interested in that shaolin vs. tkd footage you have. Any chance you can make a little quicktime and post it here for everyone?

BL: Thanks for the props, girl. Are you still working on getting Victoria into my fan club?

Dear Mr. GeneChing:

The facts have been sent. Please let me know that they have been received. Perhaps you can use them in a future feature story. Additionally, as you can see by my lack of a website, these types of skills are not my forte, and thus it may be difficult to transfer the Shao-Lin vs. TKD mastertape from the Korean archives. However, it is a most interesting tape and until which time I can post it or get you a copy, I will hold the remainder of your reading audience in suspense about the results of said altercation.

Sincerely,

You know, I have little kids come up to me and tell me that they're on the forum. You got some skills - it would have been fun to add you to the shot. Next time.

As for those seminars, that was a big disapointment. I had to leave before it was all done, but it didn't look like it was going to happen. What struck me as interesting was that given all of the snafus, nobody really complained. Everyone seemed to see it as Shaolin family and accept it. That spirit I found really exceptional.

there wasnt any seminar..why..i don tknow..but i was kind of hoping to stay and watch how li peng and justin teaches since i never seen them teach before so yeah..but it didnt happen
i guess cuz there was too little people or everyone was worn out or something ..i have no idea.

What's up Gene! It's Damian, from California; I don't know if you remember, but I was the one talking with ya right outside the building at Zhang LiPeng's tournament (I even asked you to give a shout-out to Southern California on my videocam, haha). If I recall correctly, we were talking about how hard it is to shave someone's head with a sword, lol.

Oh yeah, Shaolinlueb, yeah I saw you there, I'm even in one of the pictures you have (you'll see me in the benches waaaay in the back). I was the short Mexican guy with the blue Anchor Blue shirt and cargo-looking pants with a videocam in his hand. Yeah, I remember you. The long term forum members know about our new tradition of a pic at tournaments. Actually, it started at Taiji Legacy three years ago, then we did it again last year, and again this weekend. We spread it to this event, but now I'm thinking we'll limit it to the big posters - the 500+ club or something. Next time.

Yeah, he was sitting next to me while I was recording but he's not my kid; that was Mike Walter's kid (Mike Walter was the one who broke those bricks and bottles during the Main Event/Masters' Demo).

What's up Dave. You were with Belgium team? The ones with the black shirts, right?

Dave asked: "Does anyone have some pics from the Masters' demo ?"

Haha, well no. Not me. No VIDEO either. That's the only thing that got me a little angry man. I mean, I had to travel nearly 3,000 miles to get to New Jersey by myself man, and I took the videocam to record the competitions and Masters' Demo, for memories and all that, but once the Masters' Demo started, they were like, "NO VIDEOCAMS/CAMCORDERS". I was like, "what?! I came 3,000 miles man." That's the only thing that sucked for me on my trip over there. Oh well, aside from that everything else was cool.

GeneChing
08-04-2004, 09:31 AM
Most promoters like to make a little extra on video sales so they forbide videos at master's demos. It's common.

Will Zhang Lipeng do it again? That's a big question. We talked about it a lot. You know, he's a huge do-it-yourself kind of guy - even picked me up personally from the hotel each day. NO promoter does that - they send a student. It's way too much hassle on top of everything else. He was pretty exhausted in the end and was talking about not doing it again, but when a lot of people said how much they enjoyed themselves, he was clearly encouraged. So if you want him to do it again, I'd suggest that you let him know you had fun. For him, it's all about Shaolin and the promotion of Shaolin. He'd do anything for that. But also note that he's a no BS kind of guy. Don't say "Oh I'll bring 50 studnets next year" because he hates to hear that sort of thing. Just bring the students. Don't talk BS. (this is almost a direct quote from him). I really hope he does it again , of course. It WAS a lot of fun.

This competition was fun....If he organise it once more...hey i will be there.....:p

So you're going to be a stunt woman now, eh? What happened to being a Buddhist nun?

Man, with all the pics and comments here - I almost feel like I don't need to write the review of the event. But I will. :D

This is a little OT, but speaking of kwando - I saw some martial arts fitness program called kwando recently. I think it's like taebo. Anyone know anything about it?

hahah, omg, you serious!!! kwando is the new trendy aerobic craze?!? just kidding, but no, sorry, i haven't heard of anything like that over on the east coast. there are too many work-out trends to keep up with. i got shaolin to keep me fit, hehe. yeah, right now, i'm sick of my dead-end job, so why not try to do something fun and exciting, ya know? being a stunt woman would be something unique. it'd be a good learning experience if anything :). not looking for fame and fortune, lol...just looking to get by.
