Olympian's boyfriend jumps from same balcony as she did

August 10, 2004

As relatives tell it, it was the stuff of Greek tragedy: A lovestruck young man threw himself off his balcony Monday, two days after a quarrel prompted his girlfriend -- a member of Greece's Olympic judo team -- to jump from the same spot.

"He had very intense feelings about the girl. He was very much in love," said Nikos Drakopoulos, a printer who lives across the hall from the couple in Nea Ionia, Greece. "He could not see himself living if she was gone."

Giorgos Chrisostomides, 24, was on life support at an Athens hospital with injuries to his head and back. His high school sweetheart, 20-year-old judo champion Eleni Ioannou, was at another hospital in critical condition with multiple fractures to her head and body.

Friends and relatives said the couple's argument on Saturday was minor, and they were shocked at its tragic consequences.

"It was a small fight, something silly," said Chrisostomides' cousin and downstairs neighbor, Paul Michaelides. "It started about who would play solitaire on the computer."

---WTFing F!??!!? -csn

The fight escalated, and Ioannou eventually hurled herself from the balcony of the third-floor apartment, they said. She fell onto a concrete driveway that winds behind the apartment building.

Police questioned Chrisostomides and released him. But Chrisostomides was inconsolable.

On Sunday, Chrisostomides' grief got the better of him. Screaming, "I'm going to find Eleni," he ran toward the balcony, but friends and relatives stopped him before he could jump.

Chrisostomides' grandmother took him to see a therapist Monday morning, relatives said.

But back home, they said, as Chrisostomides was having lunch with his grandmother, he suddenly stood and bolted for the balcony.

"He was sitting there eating, and he just got up and jumped," Michaelides said. "His grandparents were there, but they couldn't stop him."

The psychological problems of the sexually immature fascinate us all.

poor kids and their firy emotional uncontrollable outbursts.
I hope they recover and get to spend the rest of their lives together trying to work that out.

I read that on CNN.com.

Kung Lek, for a Canadian peace lover you'll awfully emotionally detached at times when it comes to the day-to-day of humanity. Do you only care when it comes to flags and dollars and space ships?

My bad. This might be a case of misinterpreting the intent of something written over the net and not hearing tone and seeing facial expressions. The first two sentences sounded a little cold to me, that's all.

Anyway, I'm sure there is more to this story. No one throws themselves to their death over a card game.

And again, sorry if I misread you. Slow day, today. Huh?

Clinical depression sucks a lotta ass.

maybe from a hospital bed in a coma they can both work it out. As much as i would love to see them pull through and live again, but they probably wont.

Or it could be that there is more to the argument then just who gets to play solitaire.
Could also be just a case of passion, kids can get that way. I seem to remember things were much more extreme for me when I was younger and in a relationship then now a days.

I wouldn't call them kids, like thge mid-teen Romeo and Juliet. These people were in their 20s right?

I'm sure it was like, you always get to use the computer I want to use it.

Why? SO you can download more porn? Or IM your girlfriend, ect, ect.

Whatever the case. Yea, sounds like depression or even drugs (performance and mood altering?).

Either way. Sad story.

don't want to sound too fogey, but when you get to 40, 20 something is "kids" especially when you have the comfort of retrospect.

anyway...

"Kids" may have been a little more condescending than I intended. But my early 20s seems like a loooooooong time ago, now.

This coming from a guy who berated me for making a crack about a teenager who slept in the same room with his mom.

I'm giving up on staff and starting my training with the 4-point cane.
