I've been getting nailed by popups recently. Can someone look over this for me? Thanks. I already ran Ad-Aware, SpyBot, and CoolWebSearch. Right now I'm doing an online Panda ActiveScan.

right click on your my computer icon

select manage from the context menu

select services and applications then click on services.

select the messenger service (not msn messages)

disable the messenger service. (this is your netsend service)

that will take care of console pop ups.

next:

go to google.com

specifically, go to http://toolbar.google.com/

download the toolbar and install it.

popups should pretty much be gone with these two steps.

print this out if you need to.

cheers

I don't use msn messenger.

And I already have Google toolbar :)

find a copy of spysweeper and run it.

iron,

i explicity said not msn messenger.

you have a service running in all likelyhood that keeps your netsend service running which allows people to send messages directly to your ip address which your system is broadcasting all the time.

this service is called "messenger" it is in your services area under your computer management console.

disable it and that should clear out a whack of stuff that's bugging you.

if you have google toolbar that will kill popups for you unless you want to allow them from some sites in which case it will let you know.

run your updates on you adaware program, they have new definitions for updating every two weeks or so.

If you are running file sharing/swapping software, well, you will always have popups.

^ Thanks. I had the google popup blocker but it won't stop the stealthy ones. I ran an online scan at Panda ActiveScan or whatever and it found 3 viruses and disinfected them. The problem seems to have gone away (knock on wood). I also cleaned up with Ad-aware and SpyBot S&D but that didn't get rid of the problem.

I'll look more into that messenger thing later.

I just upgraded to Firefox, too.
