Have you seen this yet?

www.thisisnotporn.com.

Basically, each page is a riddle that you must solve to get to the next page. Some people have gotten really far on other sites.

this is pretty cool - back in the day, they used to have a hacker wars site that was similar to this - you had to hack boxes and get root. the beginning ones were easy, and it got harder as it went along.

I just got the clue to the first riddle.

SevenStar

I got the first one easy. I'm having memory issues with the PC right now, so I'll tackle the rest later.

Interesting stuff... Seems like this has been around for a while, so if you can't make it past an area, you can google for the answer. Creepy....

I got past the second screen (truck) and to a picture of an old tree and the clue "oh what a lovely drape they make"
took my whole lunch hour to get that far.

I can't - the pop up disappears before I can click view source. Even when I type the url in directly, the window just instantly closes.

hmm... there are lots of spoilers out there as I look through for clues to this thing. I'm now on the page with the four lights that says: "A moth flew in when I di4d". all four lights lead to different pages with different clues. I got nothin yet.

Back on the building pic, there's the text that says "H.M.s hotel of aquatic mammals. put that and the reference to the resort on the Aegaen sea that's embedded in that source together and you come up with this guy.

Haruki Murakami, an author (HM, natch)

http://www.murakami.ch/hm/bibliography/main.html

The dolphin hotel is in a book called wild sheep chase, and a sequel called dance dance dance:

...he is drawn to the Dolphin Hotel--a strange and lonely establishment where Kiki, a woman he once lived with, "upped and vanished." Kiki and the Sheep Man, an odd fellow who wears a sheepskin and speaks in a toneless rush, visit the narrator in visions that lead him to two mysteries, one metaphysical (how to survive the unsurvivable) and the other physical (a call girl's murder).

I found that on Amazon... theres a **** username and pass in there somewhere, I'm pretty sure.

this is getting hectic.
:)

Now, think back to some of the clues from previous pages -

WALLS 1F DH WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN

Also, there is another link on a different light on that page that asks you for a user name and pass.

Ming Yue
08-26-2004, 04:12 AM
Got it...

curiosity killed the cat is Kipper, May (it was in the text from dance dance dance.) the cat and the when.

There are three other user/pass options on that 'lights' page, seems like it'll come up again.

there's

Dorothy and the scarecrow

Master & Betrayer

On that image that appears after curiousity killed the cat, you can find the message "a life half lived" I'm a big half life fan, so that's the first thing that came to my mind. I can't view the source of that page though, so other clues must be on other pages.

I got several clues from the source of that page, one was HypericumPerforatum.htm - another page of the riddle. no password is necessary for that one. I did a search on Hypericum Perforatum - St. John's Wort.

After that, I took a shot in the dark - searched for st. john's wort and japan, since the sheepman reference was japanese - got a page about a japanese movie called st john's wort. It's about a video game designer who inherits a seemingly haunted house. As of right now, I can't tell if it has anything to do with the game.

Ming Yue
08-26-2004, 09:43 AM
st johns wort is an anti depressant: name of the page is 'hide your sorrows'...

cut and paste the code on that page into word. it makes a picture of a lighthouse... maybe a candle.

also there are these:

wax
a one armed skeleton
I am the answer
find me
not smart by half

one of the characters in the 'dance dance dance' book was Dick North, a one armed detective who battles skeletons in one part. Must be a un/pass, but not sure where that fits in yet.

HA. got something.

Dorothy and the Scarecrow. Dorothy is the female protagonist of the Wizard of oz... Got this from Amazon.com:

Dance Dance Dance is honestly one of the most remarkable books I've ever read. I felt completely in touch with the narrator and was drawn to Murakami's characters. Yuki was my favorite, Gotanda and Ame were up there too. There were so many memorable scenes. It was almost a disappointment to finish the book, leaving those familiar people behind.

The lead characters name is YUKI, not kiki. She's Dorothy. Gotanda is the scarecrow.

you're a genius - I used those as the user/pass.

a page opened up with a weird pic. I'm finding different areas of the pic you can click on that are revealing other pictures. so far I've found two - one of a cage, or electrical station or something that has this in a popup window:

TdAaIeOtFbLhAeTeDaToOsEaRfIiEwTaEa

the caption says "he disappeared. There was nothing I could do"

the other is of a weird looking manequin head on a pole. the title on that one is "piggy piggy". That is making me thing about "lord of the Flies" when they put the pig's head on a stake.

Gordius tied a cart full of goodies to a column and dedicated it to Zeus. An oracle, in town for a convention, decreed that whoever untied the knot would become the ruler of Asia.

The knot stayed until Alexander showed up, who heard the deal with the knot and simply hacked through it with his sword. Zeus, who digs it when mortals think out of the box, honored the agreement and gave up his goods.

Gordius made the knot. So therefore it's a G_______ knot.

that's your password.

bingo. I did a search on "answer hidden in wax" because of the clues you listed ("i am the answer" and "wax")...came up with nothing. I tried "message hidden in wax" and ran across two names - xerxes and demaratus.

king xerxes of persia was planning to invade greece. there was a grecian man named demaratus who had been exiled to persia. He got wind of the invasion and wanted to get a message back to greece so they could prepare. He knew that the persians would see his message had he written it on a tablet (I guess back then, guard would check your crap as you left the city or something), so he scraped the wax off of a wooden writing tablet, etched the message into the wood, then recoated it with wax, so it looked like a blank tablet.

Xerxes - master
Demaratus - betrayer

I think the maker of the game kinda messed up there though...Demeratus was originally greek anyway, so he wasn't betraying persia by ratting out the king...

Ming Yue
08-27-2004, 08:59 AM
I'm sure that we have to go back to the moth room and follow the Master & Betrayer path.

I can't make any connections with any of the clues we've found so far that are a tip off to "master & betrayer" I tried Jesus & Judas, didn't work.

I came across this:

on the page with the building (the dolphin hotel page) the title is ----eyes that C, Claws that CatCh---- I googled 'claws that catch', it's from the Jabberwocky. There's other stuff from the windmill page in Jabberwocky too; 'two reddened eyes', and the numbers 1 & 2.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought--
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Calloh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

It's about a fight. a battle. a war. the other reference from the Dolphin Hotel page that we haven't connected something to already is to the Agean Sea. A greek battle?

I'm reaching...

"Xerxes sent for Demaratus the son of Ariston, who had accompanied him in his march upon Greece, and said to him:

"Demaratus, I would like you to tell me something. As I hear, you are a Greek and a native of a powerful city. Tell me, will the Greeks really fight against us? I think that even if all the Greeks and all the barbarians of the West were gathered together in one place, they would not be able to stop me, since they are so disunited. But I would like to know what you think about this."

Demaratus replied to Xerxes' question: "O king! Do you really want me to give a true answer, or would you rather that I make you feel good about all this?"

The king commanded him to speak the plain truth, and promised that he would not on that account hold him in less favour than before.

When he heard this promise, Demaratus spoke as follows: "O king! Since you command me to speak the truth, I will not say what will one day prove me a liar. Difficulties have at all times been present in our land, while Courage is an ally whom we have gained through wisdom and strict laws. Her aid enables us to solve problems and escape being conquered. All Greeks are brave, but what I am about to say does not concern all, but only the Spartans."

"First then, no matter what, the Spartans will never accept your terms. This would reduce Greece to slavery. They are sure to join battle with you even if all the rest of the Greeks surrendered to you. As for Spartan numbers, do not ask how many or few they are, hoping for them to surrender. For if a thousand of them should take the field, they will meet you in battle, and so will any other number, whether it is less than this, or more."

on the Ancient Mariner page if you mouseover the bottom verse and wait it says "You are not of the path". pops up really fast.

according to Phillip K. Dick, 'deeds done in secret have a way of becoming found out' was Richard Nixon's fortune. tongue in cheek of course, but may be something...

on the Sheepman page there is this in the code:

No Closet.

worm-eatten
Whatever became of him?

There was barely enough room to walk.
It wasn\'t the old hotel either.
piles of books.
Narrow and Cramped.
No bed.

HTATDSENETCURDTNRHEOSEOLFH
the sheepman didn't use punctuation and ran all his words together. not sure how that factors in but it might.

Yesterday I looked around the black page carefully and random letters come up which unscramble to "shovel up that good snow", but today I can't get it to do that again...

Ming Yue

We faced each other across a small table, talking. The table was very old, round, set with one candle in the middle. The candle had been stuck directly onto a saucer. And that was the entire inventory of furnish_ings in the room. There weren't any chairs. We sat on piles of books.

It was the Sheep Man's room.

Narrow and cramped. The walls and ceiling had the feel_ing of the old Dolphin Hotel, but it wasn't the old hotel either. At the far end of the room was a window, boarded up from inside. Boarded up a long time ago, if the rusty nails and gray dust in the cracks of the boards were any indica_tion. The room was a rectangular box. No lights. No closet. No bath. No bed. He must've slept on the floor, wrapped in his sheep costume.

There was barely enough room to walk. The floor was lit_tered with yellowing old books and newspapers and scrap-books filled with clippings. Some were worm-eaten, falling apart at their bindings. All, from what I could tell, having to do with the history of sheep in Hokkaido. All, probably, from the archive at the old Dolphin Hotel. The sheep refer_ence room, which the owner's father, the Sheep Professor, pretty much lived in. What ever became of him?

The Sheep Man looked at me across the flickering candle
flame. Behind him, his disproportionately enormous shadow played over a grimy wall.

turn up the audio -- sounds to me like "my son. they murdered my son." (the boy who died at Ijsselmeer?)

on the Ancient Mariner page if you mouseover the bottom verse and wait it says "You are not of the path". pops up really fast.

according to Phillip K. Dick, 'deeds done in secret have a way of becoming found out' was Richard Nixon's fortune. tongue in cheek of course, but may be something...

on the Sheepman page there is this in the code:

No Closet.
wrapped in his sheep costume.
any indication.
boarded up from inside.
No Bath.
directly into the saucer.
must\'ve slept on the floor
worm-eatten
Whatever became of him?
very, old, round, set with one candle in the middle.
walls and ceiling
No lights.
It was the Sheepman\'s Room
There was barely enough room to walk.
It wasn\'t the old hotel either.
piles of books.
Narrow and Cramped.
No bed.

the sheepman didn't use punctuation and ran all his words together. not sure how that factors in but it might.

Yesterday I looked around the black page carefully and random letters come up which unscramble to "shovel up that good snow", but today I can't get it to do that again...

you're awsome - I got most of these, but didn't find the code in the sheepman page and couldn't make out anything other than 'murdered' and 'son' in the audio. Perhaps the 'you are not on the path' message is to let us know that that page means nothing in this quest other than to throw us off if we're not paying attention.

there don't seem to be any clues in terms of direction to head in from here except for the sheepman's room paragraph, and that's freakin' esoteric, even for this game.

later tonight I'll dig into the dorothy/scarecorw path from the moth room.

the game appears to be changing, is it a work in progress? I don't want to search for info on it specifically because I don't want spoilers, but do you know anything about the author?

oh, and if you haven't already, you should install IE.

I know you use netscape, but I'm pretty sure this thing was designed to be played on IE...

I can actually tie that to "they can't escape the storm" but I think that would be pointless.

pointless, schmointless. what's the tie?

this thing is starting to make my head spin... :D

The scene with the apple trees from WOZ turns out to be the source of an urban legend.

supposedly one of the munchkins hanged himself from a tree in the background during the filming of the scene. here's a link to a clip, there's definitely something going on in the background, but all sources say it was just a bird.

there's a link to video at the bottom of this linked page. look in the center of the clip as they're going down the road.

edit: it's a .rm file (boo) and will only play in realplayer.

I know that he has a forum, but that's about all I know. I haven't looked around it too much for fear of finding spoilers. I'm thinking it is a work in progress though.

I tell ya, if this thing gets much harder I think I may consider cheating. ;) or waiting until there's more of the game to play. I really think we're about as far as the thing goes so far. (ooo dig my blinglish)

I have a couple new insights but I want to dig around and make sure they're valid before I post.

one thing is the dates that are on the pictures. They all correspond with some cataclysmic event in history: the invention of the A bomb, Hiroshima, Hitler's birth, D-Day...

I think we're about as far as we can go right now also. I didn't notice the significance of the dates! you're a regular sherlock holmes!

I went ahead and joined the guys message board. I haven't looked around on it yet, however I did receive this in an email:

Would you call a number if it was given to you by a stranger?

What if you knew him?

What if knowing made him all the stranger?

Give it a call if you want answers.

...cuz you know it's you from the year 2027...

good point. That is very likely the case. But I could be calling with good news...

The you from the future NEVER calls with good news. It's always dire warnings. You need to watch more SF and horror movies. :)

Finally have electricity and phone restored after Ivan and will probably explore this game some more. Let me know what the prophetic phone number tells you. (besides.. "$3.00 for the first minute....")
