hello everyone i new to the forum. looking back on some topics i came across the sifu streetfighting stories. but no you mention their sifu's name. whats the deal with that. i wonder about some of these so called tales of street fights because when you get to be a sifu getting into fights just really doesn't happen because of the self control it takes to master the art. i can understand life and death situations , but i didn't read any of those in the forum. did any actually see their sifu fight these battles or was it he said she said and why would they say them anyway and disgrace your sifu.
i'm just trying to understand.

I doubt most of those stories are real, also.
The majority of martial arts Sifu's...even Wing Chun sifu's....have never been in a real streetfight. The big talk helps keep students.

I've heard WC guys were notorious brawlers.
They had alot of problems with the Mantis Schools and almost had on with the HK Bak Hok guys. Though the latter wound up in a meet and greet over dinner and diffused the stuation.

If you google search for Bak Hok, you'll run across the storyn I did.

I'll look for it in the meantime.

Peace. Pete

"In 1956, a gymnasium was opened in Lee Tat Street at Yau Ma Tei. Ng Cham, Yip Yin, Wong Kiu, Wong Cze Wing, Choy Siu Kwong, Wong Tsok, Wong Long, Fung Ping Pol, Chan Chi Man, Siu Yuk Man, Bruce Lee and others attended. At that time, Wong Shun Leung often had scuffles with members of other Kungfu clans, and caused a lot of trouble. He fought mostly with people of Chu Gar Tong Long Pai (Chu's Family Praying Mantis Kungfu Style), but in the end the matter was settled peacefully. Then there was the dispute with Pak Hok Pai (White Crane Kungfu Style). Through the mediation of Mr. Chan Yuet Fat (member of the Pak Hok Kungfu clan, also the swimming instructor of Wong Shun Leung's younger brother Wong Man Leung), a dinner-party at Mun Ting Fang Restaurant at Mongkok in Kowloon was arranged, and senior members of the two Kungfu clans were invited to come together. The dispute was thus resolved."

One has to remember that these sifus you talk about were once students like ourselves, and were once young, and were once foolhardy, just as anyone else is at the youger stages in life.

Most of the fighting was done during a time when matches were commonplace. True, fighting is not the one goal of gung fu, wing chun, or whatever..however one cannot discredit what the fighting ability of the old masters did for the arts you practice today.

Just be glad it was them who did all the fighting so that you wouldnt have to, in defense of the validity of your art.

ANother thing to keep in mind, is where you live. I mean if you leave in happycity and nothing really happens there, you'll probably won't have a sifu who fought on the street.

Now where I live, when you take the subways after 22 P.M. yu'd better be prepared for everything, including a six-year old innocent looking boy who suddenly shows you a close-up from his shot-gun :p My sifu has to take that subway every night after WT practice at about 23 P.M. Now he himself never fought, trying to stay away from the "bad guys" as good as possible. But he told me that when he would get into trouble he would not try to talk his way out of it and just finish it asap. Cause with those guys there's no chit-chat before slap-slap, there's only beat-beat :D
