On Beauty (Gibran)
---------
And a poet said, "Speak to us of Beauty."

Where shall you seek beauty, and how shall you find her unless she herself be your way and your guide?

And how shall you speak of her except she be the weaver of your speech?

The aggrieved and the injured say, "Beauty is kind and gentle.

Like a young mother half-shy of her own glory she walks among us."

And the passionate say, "Nay, beauty is a thing of might and dread.

Like the tempest she shakes the earth beneath us and the sky above us."

The tired and the weary say, "beauty is of soft whisperings. She speaks in our spirit.

Her voice yields to our silences like a faint light that quivers in fear of the shadow."

But the restless say, "We have heard her shouting among the mountains,

And with her cries came the sound of hoofs, and the beating of wings and the roaring of lions."

At night the watchmen of the city say, "Beauty shall rise with the dawn from the east."

And at noontide the toilers and the wayfarers say, "we have seen her leaning over the earth from the windows of the sunset."

In winter say the snow-bound, "She shall come with the spring leaping upon the hills."

And in the summer heat the reapers say, "We have seen her dancing with the autumn leaves, and we saw a drift of snow in her hair."

All these things have you said of beauty.

Yet in truth you spoke not of her but of needs unsatisfied,

And beauty is not a need but an ecstasy.

It is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty hand stretched forth,

But rather a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted.

It is not the image you would see nor the song you would hear,

But rather an image you see though you close your eyes and a song you hear though you shut your ears.

It is not the sap within the furrowed bark, nor a wing attached to a claw,

But rather a garden for ever in bloom and a flock of angels for ever in flight.

People of Orphalese, beauty is life when life unveils her holy face.

But you are life and you are the veil.

Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.

But you are eternity and your are the mirror.

Starry starry night,
Staring at the edge between the sky scraper and dark blue sky.
The nightlines
The lights from the windows of the sky scraper.

Nothing to prove,
Going no where,
Just watch....

Do you feel the light wind on this hill top?
The night is deep...

Beautiful! I feel mostly the Presence whenever I'm by myself. Never quite alone wherever I go. Honest!

Twas midnite on the ocean
not a streetcar was in sight
The sun was shining brightly,
for it rained all day that nite
Twas a summer day, that winter
and snow was raining fast,
as a barefoot boy with shoes on,
Stood sitting in the grass.

sitting in the car
stuck in the traffic
watching the car's head light lines
and the LAX with plane flying in and out
lights coming from and flying into the dark blue sky.

Between the loud planes sound,
there is silence.
Within the busy traffic
there is traquil.

Listen to the music,
Listen to the planes
Listen to the traffic,
listen to the silence between them

watching the night line
watching the planes
watching the traffic
watching the interior of the car
watching the watcher.

how vast is it?
how silence is it?
how tranquil is it?

Nice poem, Hendrik!

I once wrote a poem on the same theme but with more a different feel take.

Ashen Shy Pouring Rain
----------------------

Ashen sky, pouring rain
Lonely early morn.
Blaring horns, sudden brakes
Echoing through the rain.

Wretched faces, wistful looks
Longingly passing cars.
Hot coffees, giggling talks
Murmuring through the night.

In small comfort of home,
Shy Ashen, rain pouring.
In closing circle of friends,
Fire roaring, feet resting.

I've been musing over your questions, Hendrik!

"how vast is it?
how silence is it?
how tranquil is it?"

Where the Heart is, there lies the answers.

Just an stirring thought from a sleepy head! =)

He said "Oh yes you can. Just hold my hand. I think that would help."
So I sat with him a while and then I asked him how he felt.
He said, "I think I'm cured. No, in fact, I'm sure of it.
Thank you Stranger, for your therapeutic smile."
So that is how I learned the lesson that everyone is alone.
And your eyes must do some raining if you are ever going to grow.
But when crying don't help and you can't compose yourself.
It is best to compose a poem, an honest longing or simple song of hope.
That is why I'm singing...

take a little sip by a little sip, enjoy the drawing of this pen which is called night line.

See how vast is it in a narrow pen barrel(sP) when a night can be present.

See how silence is the dark and deep night which embrace the sky scrapper and the stars.

See how tranquil is it --- the lights from the windows of the sky-scapper, the lights from the stars, the night winds, the space and depth between the edge of the skycrapper, the chattting, the laughter and conversion of people afterwork from somewhere distance ..... sip a glass of cold water in this hot night on top of the penthouse with the soft night wind passing by.

Only when I was a young kid sitting on a shipwretch of the Bila Bidong Island. I watched under a moonlit night for hours how silent and calm those waves come and go crashing on my little boat all alone in a vast stretching coastline. How innocence is lost! =)

nothing lost, it is just we dont belive in what we are any more. We abandon it and we believe what we think can help us to achieve our goal (which is also a product of the society, culture., education..........)

Then, one day, we die back to that innocent, what we think can help us never did do much. The goal, that is just to keep the Ego/indentity live....

I have just watched the chinese opera on the 36 strategy. at the end the good guy win ofcorse, but then, who really win? No one.

But everyone doesnt know who they really are anymore.
