For those that are interested this weekend Oct 2 in Vancouver, Canada there will be the Total Combat Challenge which will feature several San Da Figthers from China's Wu Jing (Military Police) in a kind of East vs. West match up. Two of those are female fighters that will be matched against two of Cung Le's female San Da fighters. There will also be a San Da vs. Muay Thai match.

The event happens Saturday @ the Plaza of Nations.

I just saw Jenna Castillo (http://store.martialartsmart.net/992003.html) yesterday on her way to Vancouver for this event. She looked strong (as always) and psyched for the fight. Unfortunately I was on the phone with a client when she stopped by, so we didn't get the chance to chat really, just wave at each other.

firepalm, if you go, give us a ringside report here!

Promoters Richard Wan (Yau Kung Mun of San Fran), Wang Tat Mo (CLF of San Fran) and Fred Kwok (Wing Chun of Vancouver).

In many ways a good, but flawed event. Event Schedule / Program listed seven fights but three were pulled.

One of the female bouts, Elaina Maxwell (of Cung Le) vs. Li Qiu Lian of China. Due to too great a difference weights.

Two of the other Chinese vs. Western male fights were pulled at last minute, due to injury & withdrawal. No mention as to whether it was the Western or Chinese fighters.

First fight was a Canadian trained Thai fighter Wes 'Lionheart' Jaya vs. Chinese fighter Zhao Bo. IMHO in standup it was pretty much an even match but the take downs took an obvious toll on the Thai trained fighter for obvious reasons. Zhao Bo won unnamiously.

Second fight Alex Martin vs. Arron Price. Two BC fighters, okay fight but Alex was clearly not in fighting condition & could not continue in the third round.

Cung Le's Jenna Castillo fought a great fight against Chinese female fighter Qui Li Zi which was supposed to be for a 'World title'. Due to miscommunication the Chinese team was not aware that they had to fight five rounds & thought the fight was over in the third. Cung's team understood it to be five rounds. Each camp protested and also added that they fought differently as expected different length of fight. Chinese refused to go on, fight was declared a draw.

Gavin 'Snacks' Neil vs. Sasha 'The Pitbull' Lakovic. Gavin did not look at all a fighter while Sasha was obviously no stranger to the weights and looked buffed for it. In the first minute of the first round Sasha came on strong but clearly out of gas after that. Gavin kept his guard up & kept firing out the leg kicks & punches. Sasha was like a tree and for the most part wasn't fazed by any of the blows. In the end Sasha won what was a controversal decision.

Eduardo Fujihara of Brazil fought China champ Quing Ge Le for what was to be the other World title of the night. Quing was incredibly fast & agile. Eduardo also looked strong & prepared for the fight. Quing took Eduardo to the ground a few times but Eduardo was not fazed. In second round Quing rocked Eduardo with a shot to the jaw & sent him to ground. Eduard looked for a moment like he might not recover but managed to keep his distance & regain his composure. In the fourth round there a furious exchange of kicks & blows when the Chinese champ went to down in the corner holding his face. Apparently one of the Eduardo's kicks caught Quing in the eye (with the toe). Quing's eye was bleeding quite badly for a brief moment. After much debate the match was declared a win for Eduardo.

For an event that was not well publisized it drew a fair size crowd probably around fifteen hundred, with a large segment of that from the Chinese community. The event had a few odd additions of rappers Womack & Touche doing their 'thang' between every other fight. The event also started an hour late and there was obvious lag time between fights. Still all in all a good show.

No fighters from Chan Sau Chung's school. To date his students have only done a few forms competitions, none since the set up of their school in Richmond BC, to my knowledge have ever done any San Shou / Sparring events.
