Someone told me that best place to learn realistic fighting is not in a boxing ring or BJJ studio but in jail which is equivalent to an elite school for potential street gladiators. The article below say even the Filipinos don't have all the answers for defense against knife attack. I wouldn't recommend this kind of elite fighting academy though.

Knife Fighting

"The jawbone of an ass is just as dangerous a weapon today as in Samson's time." -- Richard Nixon

"For those who are exponents of "reality fighting", define that reality for me. Is it training with contact? Is it training with a resisting opponent? Is it going 5 rounds in the ring? Is it single-leg takedowns on a padded mat? A rubber knife? Which sounds to me suspicously like the reality of contact sport.

Or is it learning why and how criminals and violent people actually fight? "

Street Fighting

"There is a perception that self-defence is "street fighting", two guys slugging it out toe to toe until there is a winner.

If you are training to prevent yourself from becoming the victim of a violent crime through only some form of hand-to-hand combat (Karate, Kung Fu, Jeet Kun Do, NHB) you misunderstand what violent crime is all about. "

I was told to train as if I was going to have to survive in a maximum security prison , were weapons and mass attack are common place , were conditioning , the ability to run , jump evade , take abuse are just base skills
This is a concentrated dose of the evils that we can do to each other

So it’s funny that you should bring this up

But in the same breath there is no real method for dealing with the what if’s in a street confrontation and there is no such thing as knife defense , since any one that pulls a knife and plans to use it won’t show it to you first ,

All you can do is train your attributes and your mind the rest is the hands of lady luck

I stopped looking for [ the way or the answers ] long ago , when it’s time to die you will die , the angle of the tan sau or what lineage you are won’t mean a thing =)

I agree Ernie. The other things are still food for thought to give our brain something to do so it won't rot.

Pulled from another MB but I think it rounds out the thread nicely.

Good article!
Like in "Strong on defense" it shows that sparring, like duel fighting, never really happen in a self-defense situation
