Will be in the cities as listed above for 3-5 days. Trying to find one day from each trip to check out one or two different kwoons.

Linage does not matter to me, I just want to see how others train WC (ie training methodology). I haven't trained a long time so any insight would be cool.

Let me know if you know any good classes...or if ya go to classes in TO (Scarbourogh area) or Chicago(close or in downtown), and wouldn't mind a spectator..

Cheers

No one on this forum goes to, or has any suggestion sfor good kwoons to visit to in Chicago or Scarborough Ont?

I have found that Sunny Tang's headquarters is there in Scarborough, hopefully they don't mind visitors.

Anyhow, still searching for options. Any kwoon to visit near downtown Chicago?

Cheers

at Yonge and College there is a William Cheung background school. At Bloor and Yonge is a Inosanto/Vunak style JKD school taught by Myokoto.

Sunny's at Midland and Finch. Ho Kam Ming teachers out of his home, my teacher doesn't allow visitors, and Albert Law teachers from his home too I believe. Most teachers teach out of homes instead of kwoons. Whipping Hand also knows of some Jewish Wing Chun school somewhere...

I can't remember the rest of the locations...I'll try to get back to you on this later...

oh ya, there is a Yuen Kay San Wing Chun school by Midland too...so you can visit it after you visit Sunny Tang...

try all around that area...Silver Star road at Midland and Finch. There are alot of different kung fu schools there...white eyebrow, Chan Tai Chi, Choy Li Fut...and massage parlours for winding down after fighting ;) some of these schools have large gang populations though so be nice :)

Thanks for all your help!!

You seem to have the low down on WC scene in T-dot.

It would be nice to visit a private class, but I understand the why some would instate a no visitor rule. My sifu allows us to bring guests to his house/private training as long as we use discretion. Just visiting commerical classes should be fine anyhow, just want to keep an open mind and see other techniques training(if Ho Kam Ming lineage it would be a bonus).

Thanks for your info about WC scene in TO..if you get addresses, please let me know..Oh and also thx for the warning about that street and gangsters:) I'll avoid the parlors all together!

I'll try to get Ho Kam Ming's contact from my friend who went up and paid his class a friendly visit that turned out to be not so friendly :)

Let's just say that Ho thinks very highly of himself :) I'll also get the Yuen Kay San contact for you as that school is a bit underground and very secretive...maybe me and some wing chun friends could meet up with you in Sept...exchange some info and learn from each other...

The William Cheung place's exact address is somewhere on this forum...I asked a member for it but i kind of forgot where it is now :o I'll try to find it...

As for Sunny, you can contact him through his website easily enough...

you'll hear from me soon, ok? :)

Thanks again for all your help.

As for checking Ho Kam Ming's private class. I don't want to cause issues and definetly would not want to cause a confrontation...but I think I would take the risk to visit and ask if I could watch...if they say no then that's fine too.

Anyhow, would be great to meet you and your WC friends...just let me know.... I will be in TO October 11/12-16th for my cousins wedding.

keep me posted...
cheers

My bud is going to U of T (I think) doing Archatechure-post grad program?!

As for being busy, no worries if you are. But if not, let me know via email and I would definetly like to meet up.

I will be staying in the Scarbourough area, I believe where the Sunny Tang HQ is, I may just stop by there to check out what they are doing.

Anyhow, keep me posted on what you are up to!
Cheers

I'll try to make time. You have no email listed in your profile.

Wei Sui

if ya know you will have free time on a certain day...or get some during that period email me @ bil_sau@hotmail.com (we can set a meeting place/time).

A highlight for me would finding time to see a private HKM class (he was one of my sifus sifu), athough I don't know how open he is to visitors - and also from what you said about your friends visit, I am not so sure:)

As mentioned, if you are too busy then that's fine, either way...thanks for all your help on school locations in T.O!

I'm booked on the weekdays. I'll try to make some time on the 13th or 14th. Contact you via email sometime this week ok? If I don't end up meeting with you, I'll see if any of my Wing Chun friends would be interested...I'm sure at least one would be...I'll only ask the GOOD ONES ok? :D

Wei Sui

If you find any time on the weekend then it would be perfect! I will be staying with my relatives till Friday in Scarborough and on Sat I will be hooking up with my bud from Calgary (we'll probably train sat afternoon and/or sunday morn).

As for getting a bud to come out that is one of your "good ones"...no worries, getting anyone that has some knowledge to share is good! I myself have had only one year of training...my friend has has 3.5-4yrs, so having any level come by would be cool (perhaps not a total beginner ofcourse :))

--------------------------------------------------
With good reason on both counts- privacy and awareness of what he knows. Many top flight old line masters are that way. Nothing wrong with it either IMO.

My sifu doesn't like outsiders visiting our classes. I understand that. What I DON'T understand is a sifu being ok with outsiders visiting so that he can just try to put down another sifu and the students in front of a class.

Hi Empty Cup: Master Ho, when he choses to can be very blunt- where he thinks that sloppy wing chun is
being taught. He spent as much quality time with
Yip Man in learning wing chun as anyone. He knows who got it and who didnt- who learned regularly and who learned episodically. He is/was a well to do man who just devoted the last 45 years to his beloved art without diluting it, over-commercializing it or creating chain stores out of it. He has his own personality- we all do. But his message basically is that to learn the art
let alone teach you
have to give it quality time and search and find
a teacher who really knows the art.
I do not know the details on what you have apparently alluded to.In any case he is basically semi-retired.

Well, now we know there is, at least, one.

EmptyCup
10-09-2001, 05:12 AM
Yeah I think he has a student called a loong or something who teaches most of the classes and Ho overlooks it. I believe he is quite advanced in age and has diabetes...

Like I said, I didn't personally have a negative encounter with the man himself but my friends did. I didn't like what I heard but that's based on second-hand information. A couple people I know learn from him as well and I'm told by my sifu that Ho is not bad at all in Wing Chun.

Whip - what are you talking about?

Cuu Lung is quite good actually. In the public classes Ho much like Yip man just supervises someone else leading the class. Ho indeed is a senior and is semi-retired and picks and chooses
his wing chun activities. As far as for the comment by your sifu(who is he?) that Master Ho is
"not bad"... as far as the comment applying to Ho's knowledge of wing chun that is quite an understatement.

He said he was pretty good...one of the better ones from the old school. And I'm guessing you must be part of Ho's lineage since you keep going with the Ho for Grandmaster campaign :D

...that or you have a fat check waiting in the mail :)

--------------------------------
Wrong on one and a half of your guesses. There is no grandmaster in wing chun and the term is misleading. Secondly, I am not motivated by money
in my wing chun.Just the facts on Ho, his background and what he is doing. You never did mention your sifu whose opinion you quote.Still curious who he is.

To keep things simple, EmptyCup, since you keep flip flopping, who actually is your sifu? You do you call sifu? You is your sifu now?

I didn't "flip flop" what are you babbling about? I am my own sifu?!?! Is this tarzan-whip speaking? I've always said Stewart is my second sifu...
