You say "Drills are almost a waste of time" - what drills do you think are a waste of time?

I train a lot of different drills and find them very useful.

I am interested in how you train the benefits that drills give you if you dont drill.

I knew I was going to be asked this...but I didnt have time to explain..I had a UFC to watch :D

Well here goes...

There isnt a need for drills...sure they may help you but doing wing chun without the drills is actually better.I know when you do drills alot they become natural to you,And thats what you plan on using in a fight....right?

Well planning on going in a certain posistion when your about to fight isnt as good as just entering with the intent of making contact as your goal. Then you work of the posisition your arms are in...

There is more power in your movents when you dont work on fixed posisitions...so I say to myself, why would doing drills and make my body move that way naturaly when I can go without the drills...and go by fealing and then what i have naturaly gained by Chi Sau will come in...

And you didnt ask this but I look at Chi Sau as a two person form with no major fixed movements...

thanks for your reply - Interesting thoughts

Personally i like train drills and i beleive my Kung Fu is better for them - I must add that i consider myself an "experienced begginner" who still needs to work on aspects of my Wing Chun such as sensitivity, hand eye coordination, speed, Muscle memory. I personally think this is best obtained from drills.

How do you train these specific areas ?

IMO you do need to train drills but not in a to structured manner. I have spoken to a guy who drills Bong Sau/Lap Sau Drill in lines, Lapping and changing to an instructors call. I think this has less benefit unless you are a real begginner. When we train bong/lap we will fight for better positioning with our partner, pull him off balance step into his bong, try and make him lose his centre line - maybe throw a stop kick into his leg to upset his balance etc

I might start a thread about drills to judge others opinions

drills are VERY important, they help train responses in chi sau/real combat... from doing bong sau/lap sau drill when my arms pulled its an automatic bong sau :) this has saved my ass MANY a time in chi sau; i dont even think about it anymore - this is one reason we need drills

another reason is drilling lets us really focus on the tools we're using at hand.. an hour of slow bong sau/lap sau will train your structure of bong + lap... most people speed through chi sau and end up using muscle or speed to overcome their lack of proper alignment, training drills slowly for structure helps make up for this and gives real insight into what your different tools are used for

drills are very useful imho :)
