Almitabha .

My search continues, though word was passed on to me that Shi De Le was at Shaolin Temple, I still have not confirmed. Gene if you read this message, and are still visiting Shaolin, Please pass my info to Shi De Le. Thank you and Almitabha.

Ok. Here is my second search. I am looking for any info (Chinese or English) on the Shaolin Monk spade, Books, home video footage, pictures from Shaolin, etc. Through the kindness of my Shifus heart, I have been learning basics for my life long favorite weapon. “SHIFU THANK YOU!”. I want to learn everything about this weapon and its history to try to preserve it, so I my pass it on if my Shifu feels I am qualified to do so. *Prays* =] I once found a website dedicated to ancient shaolin weapons. This site came from China. It had some picture of Old Monk spades, Swords, etc... I lost the link and the site is nowhere to be found. I also lost my downloads due to a HD crash...=[ So I call upon the power of the web and the Shaolin Preservation Society (All of you).
Hey Gene.
Did a little light bulb just pop up over your head? =] (cataloging masters, lineage, weapons, history, A history based Shaolin magazine issue or section on the website. (USA Shaolin/ Martial Arts Historical Museum/ Library).

Thank you for taking time to read my post and to help my search.

Lu Zhi Shen,
I'm not sure what kind of information your are looking for.
Can you be a bit more clear what it is you want to know about
this weapon? You say, that you're already receiving instruction in it.

The idea of cataloging masters, lineage, weapons, history, etc. certainly sounds good until you try to do it. It's a mammoth task. If you're asking me to do it for you, get off your lazy butt and do it yourself, then send it here (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/about/guidelines.php). FWIW, I've already worked on a 100 style piece ( Jan 2000 (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=107)) and a 100 weapon piece (Dec 2000 (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=130)) and those were by no means comprehensive. And they were total monsters to execute.

As for monk spades, man, you got a hard on for that weapon. But hey, we all have our fetishes. :p I didn't meet with Dele on my last trip, buuuuuuuuuuuut, I did see a fantastic monk spade at the tournament (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=33287) - this master busted out a Qing dynasty cast iron headed monk spade - absolutely beautiful and very heavy. You would have spontaneously climaxed just to see this piece, I guarantee. I got the footage - it's buried in some 20+ hours of footage that I'm working on processing. It's be available to your eventually, but don't press me because then I'll have to charge you more. ;)

I too am guilty of having a hidden fetish for the weapon...it sends tingles down my spine. Ever since watching Liu Jia Hui in Master Killer :-o

I wrote a piece on the monk spade back in our Aug 2000 (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=121) issue, but it was about a lot of things beyond just the spade - one of my more non-linear pieces - it also highlighted a professional no-holds-barred fighter, Shaolin Temple and Journey to the West. I have some more research on monk spades now, not enough for a full length article, but maybe enough for a short featured weapon piece, so perhaps I will revisit the topic eventually.

Shi Yan Ming produced a monk spade video shortly after arriving in NY. I think it was done by Fire & Rain productions (Noah Mittman, Linh Tai, and a few others) (I cannot remember exactly). I beleive it is only available on VHS. I don't know if they are available much anymore or even if Fire & Rain Productions still exists.

I saw it at Flying Dragon in Wheaton/Kensington, MD. You can call them to see if they still have any.
