View Full Version : I'm a mung-bean eating hippy

So while on my recent health binge, I decided to buy a juicer. Couple of commercial (http://dysonware.com.au/shop/product_info.php/products_id/29) links (http://www.juicersaustralia.com.au/healthy_juicer.shtml). Anyway, not only did I get a juicer, it came with wheatgrass seeds so I've decided I might get into growing and *gulp!* drinking wheatgrass. I've never tried it, but my wife has. Apparently it's another "acquired" taste :p. I'll see how I go. Anyone into it? Comments?

Oh yeah, thanks for the initial recommendation a month ago or so Ka (?). It was on his advice that I looked into it and decided to give it a go. Cheap juicer and looks the goods.

 she is Ego and male and gave you an answer to what you asked. Check out juice boost bars if you have one local.... great nutritional info even in their brochures.

I drink an ounce or two if someone else pays for it. I find the taste varies, after all, it's grown fresh and unprocessed. If I'm lucky it's not too bitter and even has a sweet aftertaste. I never could tell if it did anything for me. There are tons of claims, but the longest continual span of time I regularly drank the stuff was about a week and a half (mung-bean eating hippy gf's can do that to ya... she paid for it each time at the juice bar).

However, I can attest that fresh juice is a wonderfull thing! The fresher and rawer you consume your foods, the more nutrients can be absorbed into your system. I tend to water down my fuit juices a bit, though, especially the citrus juices. Veggie juices I tend to mix to reduce bitterness and get more natural sweetness into 'em. Carrots are GREAT for adding sweetness to veggie juice. Also, if you toss some stevia leaves into your veggie juices, they can add some sweetness, tho' there's a weird aftertaste you may need to get used to.

Hopefully you'll be able to keep up the juicing past the initial phase of the brand new shiny thing. ::grin::

Wheat grass tastes like **** and lawnmower clippings but its hella good for you.
Juicer juice = divine.
Apple + starfruit + carrots + kiwi = delicious.

I used to drink wheat grass when I worked at the "Psychic Eye Bookshop" in AZ. It doesn't taste THAT bad, sheesh. I too could not tell if it did anything to me, but I drank it anyways.

Kelvin, thanks for the link. Although it's a bit marketese and unscientamatific for me - I'm not that much of a hippy yet (despite the metric system Iron ;)). But yeah, those are the sorts of anecdotes that I've read about it. Wheatgrass seeds are cheap near my home anyway, so it can't hurt to give it a shot. AUD$22/10 kg. If I don't like wheatgrass, I'll just use it as a regular juicer. But I'll stick with the wheatgrass for a while to see how it goes.

Wheatgrass juice tastes like arse, but I have heard lots of good things about it. (LOL at Eyebrows' "unbiased" link!)

Let us know how you go with it, Toby.

BTW - what does this have to do with mung beans?!

;)

Go Carrot Ginger and WG,peel/core an apple or 2 a banana (or whatever in season) into Blender with OJ and your C G WG juice = good start to the morning.
Personally I don't drink the stuff (WG) straight but the mixes are up to what fresh fruits and veg you have at hand.If you end up not liking the WG the fresh Vegie jucie is worth it alone.
Growing it, isn't a problem I have 3 pots on rotation.Seed over here costs about $2+c /kg
Enjoy

I guess hippies eat mung beans, hippies (and more recently trendy execs) drink wheatgrass juice -> title. Although I have been eating a lot of beans lately - soy, lentil, lima, etc. My wife's been putting them in salad humouring my attempts to get healthy. They're not as bad as their reputation, which I derived from watching The Young Ones and Neil years ago. Funny, I always wanted to be Vyvyan. Anyway, the various beans make quite a nice salad with lettuce, capsicum, cheese, tuna, avocado, whatever.

Sounds good. I also found a bunch of juice bars that have ingredients online. Shouldn't be hard to extrapolate amounts to make nice juices.

Growing it, isn't a problem ...Yep. From what I read yesterday mould grows in warm humid conditions mostly. WA's always had a reputation for dry heat, so hopefully it'll be even easier over this side.

BTW, thanks for the recommendation on the juicer ;). I found one for $89 here in Perth. 1/2 hr later (after I'd ordered it) I found one at bondiwheatgrass (or something) for $80 :(. Oh well. Still, most online ones were more than that.

Hey Tobes, can you pm me some links for the good juicers that you found? Also, don't you need a special kind of juicer for wheatgrass?

No worries,LOL like shopping in Asia, you can never, ever get the cheapest price!

I not going to say WG is some sort of Life changing thing,as I certinly didn't see any such effects,I just look on it as another veggie and that can't be bad for me.I would rather do it myself(juice that is) then spend money and time at those franchised Juice bars. That said I highly recommend juicing Ginger, truly good stuff if under the weather.
I did notice you like your cooking,so try juicing Garlic and use the mince and the juice in your Italian dishes.

GNC at Glebe sells a simular juicer for a little more$.Some of the other Health food shops stock different styles.Single or double Auger style is the Go(will juice just about anything grasses soft/hard fruit vegs nuts) , which is basically a mincer which crushes and cold presses the fruit /veg.This sometimes means less juice but a more concertrated flavour then centrifical juicers.Plus some argue its a less refined approach, more "natural" etc.You can buy electric auger style but they will cost you.
Yes, you do have to prepare fruit /veg by peeling, cutting(for size and ease),and you do have to clean the jucier after every use(nothing new there).
Hope thats usefull.

I bought from the first one, which is in Perth. This (http://www.bondiwheatgrass.com.au/products/juicers/index.html) place is better value, and over your side. But I cringe anytime I see the word Bondi - dunno why :D. Pretty much every site has the same juicers and the placcy one's the cheapest (and the one Ka recommended). Whatever you choose, the auger ones are for grass (as well as juice) whereas the chopping ones (like our old Breville leccy one) aren't good. That Bondi place sells everything else you need too (seed, trays, etc). I see Ka's jumped in with advice too. If you get the placcy one, make sure it's a Genoooine Mk3, since the Mk1 is cheaper but missing a few goodies.

I did notice you like your cooking,so try juicing Garlic and use the mince and the juice in your Italian dishes. Mmm, ginger. Love it. Ginger beer (e.g. the Bundy one), ginger ale. I used to mix Stone's Green Ginger Wine shots with beer once - tried that? Garlic? Maybe - I've got a funky press that you can store the peeled cloves in a tube like thing and only press what you need when you need - like a screw-driven ram inside a tube. I use that mostly.

Mat - did you really live with Adrian Edmondson?

Thanks for the juicer tips - I'll investigate.

He occasionally threw things like fire extinguishers at people, and would hide behind the corners in the house to ambush people. He even tatooed himself and mispelled his name. I **** you not.

And that was just on days when even mindless violence seemed boring.

:D

Nah, he was a mate of mine, and his old man was my karate teacher for a few years, so we used to spar a lot. He used to lose it a bit though, his eyes would glaze over and he would forget to pull punches, or headbutt you or something... Big lad, 6'3" and sometime steelworker, natural born brawler... hit him and hit him - ****er would not go down!!!

Sharpened me up no end... :D

Had a bouncing job with him once and spent more time trying to keep him out of trouble than the punters! Still came in handy when he threatened the boss for trying not to pay us!!!

Those were the days...

BORED BORED BORED!!!
