View Full Version : New respect for Shorthand

I've just started doing Arnis, and made an interesting discovery. Throughout my martial arts life I've experienced a few shorthand systems such as Wing Chun, Bak Mei and Wuzhuquan. However I've always preferred longarm systems when it's come to the rough and tumble of fighting (maybe because I'm 6'2" and 220lbs).
As soon as the tight knifework started coming at me though, all my shorthand came flooding back  Now I don't know if this is because I was restricted by the format and so couldn't use the longarm principles I'd probably utilised, but the shorthand stuff made far more sense against a knife for me than it ever had against a fist.

Ben, like you I’ve started practicing Filipino martial arts and I also prefer long-arm boxing and have found that I’m using more techniques from my early day’s in wing chun and hung gar kung fu such as pak sao and especially lan sao and pow jan when practicing hubud exercises.
