can someone explain to me how the voting system works? I know that electoral are based on the population of that state. and a president gets more than 50% of the electoral votes in that state, they win that state. so what are popular votes really for?

electoral vote = senator + house representatives.
100 senators total
435 house representatives total
3 delegates from Washington DC
-----------
538 => 1/2 * 538 = 269, hence candidate need 270 to have a majority.

Each state legislature decide how the electoral votes are allocated based on the popular votes of that state. most work on a winner takes all basis.

If you get the most popular votes of that state, you get all of the electoral votes from that state.

think of a seven games baseball series. If we suppose runs are popular votes. you don't win the series by having more the total number of run scores than the other team. you win by winning four out of seven games. you can blow out your opponent in each individual games, but you have to win four games. If baseball series are govern by total run scores, NY Yankee would have beaten the red sox this year because the yankee scored more total runs. but, people accept red sox as the winner because sox won more games (4 games out of seven played).
