In the beginning of the 21 century;

More people enjoy more political, and economic freedom everywhere.

Eastern Europe is merged with western counterpart. Euro-dollar is the common currency of a united Europe with a single market mechanism.

Russia and her formerly unioned states are together as a federation of both economic and political interdependence. Free elections take place across the fed.

China is more open with its market. More Chinese enjoy economic fruits than ever before in its history of civilization. Taiwan has a democratic system that people may express opinions freely.

No single person may sway the mass one way or the other. When a single person had absolute power, there were the darkest moments in the 20 century.

Yes, there are economic difficulties and political hurdles remained to be challenged.

Overall, people everywhere are doing better.

The current, or the wind of the people is moving forward.

Whoever in power has to recognise this trend and go along with it.

People is like an ocean. The rulers are like dinghy boats.

Always remember to watch the direction of the current and the wind, you may have a good ride or go in the other direction, engulfed by a giant wave and sunk into the depth of the ocean.

Do you think we are doing better?

Do we have good leaders everywhere or not?

In China, Hu will push forward more economic freedom and development. The success of which lies the new power base for CCP, as the Revolutionary old guards graduately disappear from the scene. Mostly passed away.

In Taiwan, the division and difference between the Green and the Blue will slowly wane, and more power to the general population. No single person or a single party has all the power any more.

The love for Taiwan is a recent popular phrase. Sort of micronationalism with a local flavor.

This is an exciting time to live.

All the leaders should realize this and lead everyone into a better and brighter future for all in the 21 century.

:D

I think what we need now is less leaders and a reformation of politics in general.

In teh west we are working on a modified version of government that is still millenia old. I think it's time to change and I am all for removing power from individuals.

The prime minister of canada even has too much power as far as I am concerned and there are not enough checks and balances to ensure that corruption does not occur.

the same goes for the office of the p of the usa which also has entirely too much say on the way of the country. and of course, there are many examples of poorly structured governance around the world.

we, as a species need to rethink how we progress and we need to evolve out of or habitual action of letting someone else deal with our lives.

I like the edo system. It didn't get enough time on the mat to really show it's value as a method of representative government.

As an overseas Chinese;

I'll comment more on Chinese politics.

In the beginning of the 20 century, Qing goverment with the 2000-year-old tradition of dynastic rule was not able to cope with the changing world brought by better political systems and technology.

The mood of the people was to change and save China.

Dr. Sun Yet Sen saw the New Deal with Qing was not working. The imperial system had to go. One man ruling all of China had to be given up.

We need a constitution and an assembly. Those were working for the British, the French and the US.

People wanted to change. It triggered the public support of the Republican revolution in 1912.

Yuan Si Kai was the Bei Yang Minister and commanded the elite Qing New Army.

He negociated for Qing to relinquish the power to rule to the new Republic.

However, Yuan failed to see the will of the people. Later on, he tried to install himself as the Emperor and he failed and fell.

He was on top of moods of the people and the Army most of the time and rose to power.

Yuan may be the President for the republic for some time. However, he bribed or kylled the members of the Parliments. He tried to seize more power. In effect, he already had more power than any one else.

The President of the Republic is nominal. The prime minister of the Parliment and the Parliment have the power. And the power is from the people.

Yuan was riding the wave of the people to his early success.

However, with his intention to install himself as the new emperor without public support. He failed terribly in the counter currents or waves of the people.

People are the ocean that carries and also sinks the boat (ruler).

Once Yuan was out.

His former students or cadets in Bei Yang Army fought among themself. Zhang Xiung even tried to install Pu Yi back to his throne.

China was under the siege of the warlords.

Dr. Sun knew that he has to raise a new Army loyal to the Republican ideas. He established Huang Pu (Wam Pao) military academy. And Chiang Kai Shek was the principal.

Many communist generals were also students in the Academy. CCP Premier Zhou was the chief in teaching.

Again, people suffered under the warlords.

Chiang's Nationalist Revolutionary Army (Kuo Ming Ge Min Jun) was popular. The people supported his Army and the ideas.

The 30's were the golden periods for the Nationalist.

Japan soon invaded China.

After dissaters of Culture Revolution, Great Leap forward, etc.

China needed to change.

Deng started to open up the market and postponed the socialist agenda indefinately in the '70.

The rest is history.

The open door policy continued with Jiang and then now Hu.

Rulers come and go.

Those who detect and know what people need and go in the same direction will be considered as the good leaders like a mother rearing the children. (Lao Tzu)

Those who fail to see the needs of the people and "enforce" a personal agenda over those of the people will soon lose power.

So people rule and people win.
