The Wu-Tang is down to 8 members. May you find the peace in the next world that eluded you in this one, Big Baby Jesus. (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1493725/20041113/ol_dirty_*******.jhtml?headlines=true) I can't really say I'm surprised. I don't think anyone could. The guy was nuts - the classic example of an unstable personality living life to every excess he could achieve. A tortured genius of a very particular, unenviable kind. Bless the man for his talent, and music, and entertainment value as a freaky-deaky motherfu(ker.

Old Dirty ******* found dead

BY DEBORAH S. MORRIS AND WIL CRUZ
STAFF WRITERS

November 13, 2004, 9:32 PM EST

On the eve of a comeback, one of rap's most colorful characters, Ol' Dirty *******, aka Russell Jones, collapsed and died this afternoon in a Manhattan recording studio. He was 35, but just two days shy of his 36th birthday.

Jones was pronounced dead at 5:04 p.m., said Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the city medical examiner's office. An autopsy will be conducted Sunday, she said.

Police sources said Jones, one of the founding members of Staten Island's Wu-Tang Clan, was in 36 Records LLC at 545 W. 34th St. just after 4:30 p.m. when he complained he was having difficulty breathing and collapsed.

An ambulance arrived minutes later and EMS workers raced to the fifth-floor loft, which includes the recording studio and an adjacent area with a living room and kitchen. Jones, who had collapsed in the living-room area opposite a pool table, could not be resuscitated.

A police source at the scene said no drug paraphernalia was found.

Tonight, outside the recording studio on 34th Street, about 30 grim-faced mourners -- including bandmates Ghostface Killah and Raekwon -- entered the building. Just after 8:30 p.m., Jones' body was removed and placed in an ambulance.

"This ain't no joke. This is real life, just like if you lose your mother, your brother. This is real life," said Ghostface Killah, who spoke with those assembled outside.

"It's a big loss. It's a big loss right now. I knew him for 20 years. He was my brother, heart, soul, pride and joy."

On Friday night, Jones had appeared at a concert at Continental Airlines Arena in the Meadowlands, Wu-Tang Clan's first East Coast appearance in five years. The nine-member group had burst on the rap scene in 1993 with their album, "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)." The group recently released a CD featuring a few new songs as well as some old releases.

Jones, who was born in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, had much success with Wu-Tang Clan in the early 1990s, then went solo in the mid-90s and released two successful albums. He also recorded duets with Mariah Carey and Macy Gray.

Since November 1997, he had had a series of run-ins with the law, stints in rehabilitation and rumors of mental illness.

That year he was arrested for failing to pay nearly a year's worth of child support for three children he had with his wife, Icelene Jones. He ultimately fathered 13 children.

At the 1998 Grammy Awards, ODB took the stage and interrupted Shawn Colvin's acceptance speech to complain that Wu-Tang Clan hadn't won. The group had not been nominated in that particular category.

In another notorious episode, the rapper in 2000 eluded a court-mandated rehab stay, becoming the music world's most famous fugitive. He was nabbed at a McDonald's restaurant when the arresting officer recognized the rapper because her son was a fan.

Pay closer attention. We are not praising his addictions or deadbeatness. We are praising his musical abilities and performing charisma. In fact, we lament his shortcomings as they led to his premature end, thus depriving us of further music and excitement.

deadbeat? Show some respect for the dead. The man still took care of his kids, and his entire family for that matter. Generations above and below him. He had some problems, but Id put money on it that you do too. Maybe not with drugs, but then again you cant even compare your bank account to his.... Regardless of what he did, or didnt do, he came from nothing and made something of himself.

It's august of 1994. Vibes first annual anniversary party. Doug E. Fresh is on the mic, giving the 500 plus crowd the nostalgic chills with a medley of his hits from yesteryear. Little does he know his show is about to be cut short by a disguised kamikazee. Hidden in hunting hat and glasses, Ol' Dirty ******* finds a microphone and heads for the stage. While Douge E Fresh performs, Dirty lurks in the background. "Yo!" Dirty screams into the mic. "I love Doug E Fresh!" Doug E. looks to the side, shocked, where Dirt dog is dancing like a hippy at Woodstock. "Brooklyyyyyn Zuh!" he screams. "Brooklyyyyyn Zuh!" Dirty stops arm outstretched and head down, as if frozen in time. Security rushes in to escort him off, but he makes his move to the other side of the stage. All the while Doug E. Fresh continues, as veterans have been known to do, and security tries the psychological approach. They tell Dirty that they love him and want him to come off the stage so that they can talk. Dirty reciprocates the love and agrees. Security has won another victory over a rowdy troublemaker...they think. As they exit, Dirty breaks free and runs back to continue his harrassment. "Brooklyyyyyn Zuh!" is the chant; he ends his performance by hurling his microphone into the ceiling. Doug E. Fresh, obviously nerved, gives love to O.D.B. and finishes his set.

There's an outdoor performance at 1994's How Can I Be Down music-biz conference. Capleton is performing. Somehow, Ol' D finds a microphone and makes his way to the stage. "**** a Capleton!" he (allegedly) screams. "Play my ****!" he yells to the DJ. "I said put my **** on!" Frustrated, he walks to the DJ booth, tucks the mic under an arm and digs through the crates until he finds "Brooklyn Zoo." He puts the record on, gives it a zigga-zigga and plays the instrumental while he puts on a performance. The crowd is in total shock as ODB showers them with the product of his steel-belted nuts. Pure unconcentrated confidence that pokes a sharp stick in the eyes of repercussion.

Wu Tang Clan had some great lyrics, they were the few black rappers that talked about other things besides: hoes, money, and big shiny rims.

few? If this era, maybe. rap has goine through various eras, if you will, each having it's own charactersistics. The 80's were party oriented, next gangsta rap became popular, followed by ice rap - that's what you're referring to. There are several that haven't conformed to the new era, however and have stayed true to hip hop. But, what comes around goes around. People like tallib kwelli, jin ( a chinese rapper on the ruff ryders label), kanye west and dialated peoples are taking rap back to it's golden state. other artists, like jadakiss and fabolous may be facilitating this as well, with changes in their style.

my huge problem with hip hop nowadays is that no one seems to know how to make a beat. its all minimalist electronisized garbage....basically lazy. i haven't heard a new rap song in ages with a beat that gets my head moving....you know, spontaneously before u even realize why :D. then your like.....oooooh sh!t....this is my sh!t! made u wanna own a lowrider with a dozen hydros in the trunk.... bumpin it down the street. aaaah the good old days.... :D

Yeah it sucks,,RIP ODB. I really did like the work that Wu tang did in the Movie "Ghost dog".

And as for the prik who put the dead man down? Look at yourself before you look at others in the way you described dude.

you may not be a deadbeat dad or a drug abuser but there are other things that make a person less of character,,say like judging another before you really KNOW the other.

I dunno if it's that so much as it is changing times. back when the west coast was in the forefront, bass is what it was all about. I think alot of people cared more about the beat than the lyrics (some things never change) but there are producers now who have talent. jin has some nice beats on his cd, and I think kanye is an awesome producer.

I don't think he started bangin after his music career started - he was just in the spotlight more afterward, so he'd never been caught. When he moved to cali around age 17, he started running the streets. biggie was the same way - his mom sheltered him as a child, but when he got into high school, he started hustling.

I met ODB about a half decade ago. I had gone to Wudanshan with RZA and Shi Yanming in '99. (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/ezine/article.php?article=5) I'm not sure, but it was a year or two later that the Wu-Tang Clan did a show at the now defunct Maritime Theater in SF, so I went to see them. Shi Yanming arranged a pass for me (I work in the music industry, but never for Maritime). I remember hanging outside their dressing room with some classic rap groupie chicks, I mean like cheesy ho's like straight outta superfly or something. I'm waiting patiently, wondering why any of the clan would want to see me instead of these girls, then I get called back. They're all squeezed into a tiny dressing room, goofing on each other, hanging out between sessions on the mike. RZA introduces me around. It was fun. I remember that some one had stepped on a ketchup packet and made a big mess and there was this big investigation about who "busta ketchup", like frat boys trying to find out who peeing in the sink. So I met ODB, shook his hand, and that was about it. Most of the time I was hanging out with RZA, since he was the only one who would know me. He was very into the cover story (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=99) I did with him and Yanming. Unfortunately, all the successive times he's come to our area, I've had other engagements.

REMEMBERING ODB

In a recent article I did about Flavor Flav, I referred to Flav as being one of the first cats in hip hop whose personality was just "out there". I also made a reference to ODB; if only I had known that his time with us was going to be so short, I would've reached out for the brother.

What did ODB bring to hip hop? Well, he truly bought the kind of humor I grew up hearing in parks and on street corners in New York, DC and Oakland. Nobody, and I emphasize NOBODY kept it gullier than ODB. Like the time he showed up to the Welfare office with MTV's camera crew in tow, as well as with his wife and kids, in a limousine, that was the funniest @#%$ ever. To top it off - he had his welfare card on his album cover. Yes, he did. The welfare people went after him for that too.

I will forever cherish the VH1 episode: "ODB on Parole" because it captured a man, not a rapper, not a thug, not an artist, but a man in transition. A man who truly had to come to grips with the consequences of his life. And it is a hard thing to do. He was brutally honest when he said, "I don't know how to deal with life without drugs."

Or in an argument with -- one of his many - babies mothers, he slammed the phone down yelling, "***** you gonna get your money, and then you gonna leave me the @#%$ alone, and I want blood tests for them kids!" I don't know of too many people - especially rap artists-- who are willing to bare themselves like that in public. But Russell Jones did it. And he stood up like a man.

I can't remember which magazine, but while ODB was incarcerated in Clinton, a writer went there and interviewed him. He found ODB to be basically, out of his element and on the edge. This is in stark contrast to the perception the public had of ODB. You would think a wild guy like him would be just fine in a place like Clinton, after all, he was the personification of the ghetto. But he wasn't half the thug that he was perceived to be.

Remember the photo of him in his drawers, with no shirt revealing bullet wounds and Lord knows what else? And the Dracula style gold-fronts? Nobody could pull that off like he did.

What about the shows he stole. Literally. He was infamous for rushing the stage, whether it was because he didn't like the group performing, was drunk, or a combination of the two.

I'll never forget the time my mother called me up while she was watching the American Music Awards to ask me who Old Dirty ******* was, because he had just rushed the stage to accept an award that he wasn't even nominated for. He said he had paid a whole lot of money for the outfit and was gonna be ****ed if he didn't get to show it off. Now that's keeping it real.

Or what about the time on MTV, when it was Praz, Mya and ODB, and ODB took one of his gold fronts out revealing an empty space in his grill. Or when Praz and Mya were talking about what they were going to do for the community -- charity wise, and someone called in and said,"ODB, I've heard Praz and Mya talk about what they were gonna do for the kids and the community, but what are you gonna do?" To which ODB responded: "Who me?" "Yeah you!" With timing only a seasoned comic would have, ODB responded:..."Nuttin!"

The first time I heard ODB was on a tape of the Bobbito and Stretch Armstrong show, some guy -- who sounded drunk -- called in to the show and was ranting, "Peace God, peace God, this is the God Unique! Yeah, who was the crab rapper? Yo God, let me serve him God!" My initial reaction to him rhyming was at first: incredulity. He slurred his words and some words were just... incomprehensible. But, his spirit, that's what got him over for me. He was funny! Later the God Unique emerged as the Old Dirty ******* with a crew from Staten Island called the Wu Tang Clan.

What will ODB's legacy be? I don't know. The late Tupac Shakur is being remembered as a voice of a generation, a thug poet whose "Thug Life" moniker and audacious acts may have led to his untimely death. The late pioneer MC, Keith "Cowboy" Wiggins of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five is remembered with reverence by many of his peers, but died broke and unknown to the masses of rap fans world wide. The late Eric "Eazy E" Wright, a founding father of gangsta rap is revered by rap fans over 25, he helped to usher in a style of rap that touched the hearts of kids in and outside of the inner-cities of America. Though, there was nothing socially redeeming about his music, his death due to AIDS related pneumonia, inspired many a brother to use condoms.

I think ODB's legacy for us will be that he represented that time in hip hop when it was coming out of its adolescence and into adulthood and was looking for direction, and that direction led some of us down that dark path on the insatiable quest to keep it real. Along that path some of us took wrong turns, we found out what keeping it real really meant. It meant trips to Narcotics Anonymous, bullet wounds, and incarceration and for some: Death. But if you were lucky enough to survive all of that you might, you just might make it to grow old.

May Russell Jones find eternal rest and Long Live Hip Hop.

Ol’ Dirty *******, real name Russell Jones died on November 13th in New York, aged 35
