Greetings,

Have any of you repasted at Dot's Place in Austin? According to Are You Really Going to Eat That? (Robb Walsh) "the owner, Dot Hewitt, is one of the foremost practitioners of black Southern cooking in Texas, and okra is one of the best dishes in her lunchroom." Expecting a full report- the Captain

It's got a great rep, to be sure, but I've not had the pleasure.

I can certainly vouch for the excellence of Madam Mam's Thai jernt at 26th and Guadalupe, especially the NS 14 (Guay Teaw Tom Yum Moo, spicy pork soup with fish ball, imitation crab, and peanuts) which I usually take with bean thread noodles, although rice stick and some other kind of noodles are also available.

What is this "pork" object you speak of? My data banks tell me this does not fall into the category of "kosher", or acceptable food items. I'm looking forward to returning to Los Angeles shortly where a fello can put himself outside of some real! soul food. Incidentally, have you had an opportunity as of yet to frequent the website egullet.com ? Me thinks you might enjoy it- check out the discussion forum for your area.

your fellow culinary adventurer,

Uh, you do know that soul food has pork in almost everything, right?

Great Southern Cookin' reminds me of a place i used to go to in the early 90's when i was travelling around Kentucky doing the craft shows and such.. Was Called the "Black Kettle". everything was served on a wood burning stove,,all the good stuff too. man i miss those times.

As for the Asian resteraunts in town. Madam Mams is a great place.

veggie heavan(all vegan there)

Satay (Foo is THE master of thai and indonesian cooking)

Saigon kitchen and Kim Phung (best viet food in the world)

Sea Dragon2 (up north Austin,,great chinese/viet mix of food)

As for great southern cookin' Dot's is the place but THREADGILLS is still the #1 in my opinion.

Peace,,,TWS

HEY WHEN WE GONNA GO HAVE A BEER AND PLAY KUNG FU IN THE PARK AGAIN? ;)

I was just funnin' ya, Chang Style, although with a bit of determination, I think one could eat well at any soul food joint and still avoid the p- collard greens, hushpuppies, corn bread, smothered chicken, mac and cheese, fried chicken and waffles, various bar b que items....

ketchup - most greens have pork in 'em. Probably a bunch of the fried stuff has either lard or suet aka hog fat in it, as well as the cornbread. The swine really is a staple in southern cooking. Just for the record. This is a very good chowtown, though, and you shouldn't have trouble finding stuff to eat. For Barbecue, I'd go to either The Salt Lick (which is a loooong drive out of town and two counties over, but well worth it) or Ben's on E. 11th, where the mutton is so tender they serve it with a spoon.

Willow Sword - When are you available? I'm still working evenings, weekends, and some weekdays, so I'm pretty out of shape and out of practice. Any crossing of hands is bound to be good for me. I'm afraid that I probably get too much beer already!:(

Right now weekends really suck for me. I'm working 'em a lot.

And isn't Nova Scotia just Canada again?:D

My main nucker Andy Goldsworthy (who I understand is going to be the topic of the next big show at the Austin Museum of Art) made some great stuff up there a few weeks years* ago. You can see it on the recently released DVD "Rivers and Tides" and I strongly recommend you do so.

*D'oh!

Willow Sword, have you tried Tam's Deli or Sunflower restaurant? Very good viet food. I prefer Thai Kitchen to Madam Mam's for thai. Sacrilige to some, I know.
I don't have a very good appreciation of soul food (I'm a veggie), but wheatsville deli makes a **** good southern-fried tofu sandwich.

There's an incredibly good mexican restaurant called Fonda San Miguel on north loop if you want to go a bit upscale.

I keep meaning to try Sunflower, but everytime I'm in that area I go to either Dinh's or Pho Cong Ly instead - well, actually whatever Pho Cong Ly has changed it's name to, but I can't remember what that is.

...i had some really good mexican food somewhere near the river on the east side of town not too far off the MOPAC (???) loop or whatever.......but that was like 11 years ago......gonna get back to Austin someday for a vacation, really dug the place.

Those directions don't make sense - Mopac is several miles west of the east side. No big deal, obviously, since we're dealing with 11 year old memories here, but I can't come up with any good guesses for where you might have been eating, since the location you describe doesn't exist.

If you want the best mexican food in america, drive 125 miles south on I-35. Be careful which hole in the wall you pick, its like sticking your hand in badger holes looking for treasure. Pick the wrong one and you'll be hurtin.

:D

well, I was selling xmas trees in Bee Caves and went back towards austin on whatever that road was (Bee Caves Rd?) and got on some sort of highway, went north a couple of exits and then east again to find a laundry mat and there happened to be a mexican place right next door.

went down to 6th street a couple times and, umm, one of the finer gentleman's clubs somewhere near Congress.

Okay, if it was hella expensive, that might've been the Fonda San Miguel place mentioned by Grond.

The east side starts at i35, the OTHER major north south highway, for the record.

Me too, but that's kind of like saying "my favorite furry porn site." It's just not a category that interests me much.

Modelo is the devil. I opened one and the top of the bottle came off in the lid. I cut myself on it.
