He was the Guitarist for Pantera. He was killed when a gunman rushed the stage.

R.I.P.

he was pretty **** good at guitar. pantera used to be one of the best metal bands out there. until after the great southern trendkill. he will be missed him in all his druggy heavy chord thrashing greatness.

I was torn with the whole Pantera thing. I loved the music but the racist comments that the band made, or atleast members of the band really turned me off to them. I refused to buy any of their albums. I know, it's just music, but still, have to stick to mu guns on some things that are important to me.

Regardless this is too bad. I'm curious to find out what the motivation was.

Man... That sucks.
Dimebag was one of the best guitarists in the metal industry. He even had his own signature series gibson guitars.
R.I.P.

Are you kidding me? This is the coolest Heavy Metal death ever! These guys are wailing away on stage and some crazed fan jumps up and blows them all away. You couldn't script it any better.

Better to burn out than fade away, I always say.

i never really looked at it that way.

i guess thats kinda true.

This is a completely uncool turn of events for those of us pursuing careers in the musical entertainment industry.

If you would have asked these guys 10 years ago how they wanted to die, they would have said on stage, playing, more than likely.

I mean, this is way cooler than Sid and Nancy.

Yeah... Just sucks that such a talented person got blasted in the middle of a show.

I wonder if there'll be crazy security at shows now.

It's sad that it may have taken something like this to happen in order for things to change. Violence at rock concerts, basketball games, public speaking events, it's all out of hand and it needs to stop. Oh sure, I was there when Pantera first hit it big, I was in the pit too, saw Korn, Megadeth, Metallica, Helmet, so I'm a little bit of a hypocrite, but times change along with people.

Go here http://www.damageplan.com/ to pay condolences.

Now I'm rambling, sorry. Gonna go pop in Cowboys from Hell and cry.

What racist stuff did they say?

I thought Pantera's music was pretty hit or miss. I didn't like a lot of it, but some of it was really cool.

We were talking about it at work today and supposedly the guy had said before shooting him "Why did you guys break up?"

I saw Lamb of God last night and they dedicated their set to Dimebag. F*cking good set too.

I thought Phil cleared up the whole racist comment thing? Wasn't he misinterpreted?

Watch pantera 3, the video. Watch what they do for that little Brazilian kid. Dont think they are too racist or they would not let that kid hang with them. Everyone is born into this world with a role to play. The outcome of his death will ripple as it should through the fans and the people who are just learning of the man and the band. The effects that the ripples have are what he was born to do. This is a sad event, yet it is how it happened. R.I.P.

"Screaming, 'You broke up Pantera, you ruined my life', Nathan Gale bounded onstage at the Alrosa Villa and began shooting at guitarist Darrell (Dimebag) Abbott, 38, with a pistol just as his new band, Damageplan, was cranking out its first song.

Then Gale fatally shot a bouncer and two rock fans, and was about to shoot a hostage he had in a headlock before a Columbus cop stopped the slaughter with a single shot that left Gale dead."

Only the good die young....:(

One of the heaviest bands around, Pantera was - and Damageplan was doing great, too. This sucks...

The guy was heard telling Dimebag "You killed Pantera!" or something like that.

Red, yeah, need some links here about the racist stuff. Maybe the few of us are wrong here, but that doesn't sound very solid. Where did you hear or read that? A link would be nice...

Found this - I think it's old:

"They don't ****ing know me at all!
A racist? A white person who
hates black people? My favorite
sport is boxing, every hero of mine
is black. I can't name one white man
i am proud of! And if you really want
to get down to brass tacks, i am
French and Italian, so if that's Aryan,
you can kiss my ****ing balls!"

And this: http://pages.infinit.net/dimebag/review1.htm

OK lyrics from Rise:

Mass prediction, unification

Breathing life into out lungs

EVERY creed and EVERY kind

To give us depth for strength

And No Good (Attack the Radical):

In the states

There's a problem with race

Because of ignorant past burned fires

From evolution

We've been killing each other

I figure man should have it down to a science

No chance

Not for a minute

Not for a second

I won't be defensive

I'm straight out in my opinion

You'ld better listen to a man who knows what he is saying

I've seen your side

You run and hide for the mere fact that you feel inferior

Be superior

And know your interior

(Pre) Race, pride, prejudice

Black man, white man

No stand

Live in the past

We make it last

A hated mass

No solution

Mind pollution

For revolution

(Chorus) So low behold my eyes

This land of fools will rise

No good

For no one

You blame oppression and play the role of criminals

To rape and burn show progress is minimal

White hoods and militants you know it's such a pity

Living, breathing

Violence in your city

If one man

Had one home

In one world

Held live alone without variety

Full of anxiety

No one to point at, question

Or even talk to -- in his private grave

No matter what color

He wouldn't be saved from hell

He dwells

A closed mind playing the part of prison cells

So in short, the lyrics are definitely not racist, but some of the sh! he says on stage seems to be. As the girl in the article says though, he may just not be very good at articulating himself, as he seems to be railing against positive discrimination etc. But that would also seem to be a stretch of goodwill.

Sh!t man, there's loads about this all over the net, draw your own conclusions. :D
