Hi!
I'm looking for a pair of Coldsteel Butterfly swords, these are hard for me to find, as Coldsteel has stopped manufacturing them. 99.9% of the martial art internetshops which still have the swords on their sites, cannot deliver the product as they usually do not keep this in stock.

I would appreciate it very much, if anyone could provide me with information, where I could purchase these beautiful butterfly swords.

Greetz,

Sazuka-oshi

Same here... Looking for a set of butterfly knives (not swords). The kind used in SPM.

Also, if anyone knows how they called in chinese (Wu Dei Dau or something, I dunno)...

the MAM high quality "wu dip dao" (butterfly knives) are pretty good albeit a little light. But that's just because I learned on hunka junk heavy wide blades. lol

anyway, these (http://www.martialartsmart.net/452067.html) will be just as good as any you would get from coldsteel.

if you want the fatty blades you can get those I guess, but seriously, i have a pair of these and they are sooooo much better than the original ones i learned with.

KL,

Are you kidding? The butterfly swords you are talking about are not long enough to cover my forearm up to my elbow which a decent sword should do unless your a little man or woman. Especially if your going to use them in light sparring or weapon sets. You would want to cover the forearm totally. They were way short for me to use.

They are also light and are not very well balanced compared to the Cold Steel heavy duty swords. I agree they look nice on the wall, but thats about it.

I have a pair of combat steel butterfly swords I picked up at Bok Lei Po. I got them for $80.00 plus S&H, but they are decent and have a wide blade with bronze handles which are wrapped in leather. The link to them is listed here:

http://www.bokleipo.com/product_info.php?cPath=40_41&products_id=542

They have a short version and a long version for us big guys with long forearms.

It is a shame that the Cold Steel ones are no longer being made. They are very nice. But look into the Bok Lei Po ones instead of the Hanwei version, they are better in my opinion. Especially for training as they are heavy.

I got a pair of "melon cutters" as my Sigung puts it from BLT that are off the hook... cheap too!! $69 for a pair of combat steel wu dip dao that are solid! I'll find the link for them when I have a minute.

I'm waiting for Kris Cutlery to retool their shop & start making theirs again. That shape is what my sigung uses & said he saw in China at our headquarters. You can see theirs at www.kriscutlery.com under the Chinese arms section.

Dale, you gotta be more flexible man. :p

I have a few pairs of these things now, from that pair i mentioned, to the big fat ones you see more in Hung Kuen and the smaller ones being used more in WC.

all the same idea in usage more or less. I prefer the smaller lighter harder steel ones over the big cheap steel chromys. :D

they are afterall kitchen tools ultimately. lol

KL,

I'm just letting off a little steam after being on the mend for a number of months after partially tearing my left bicep tendon off my arm on the job, I'm an EMT. I was not impressed with the Hanwei knives though their Jian are freakin awesome.

Though for hard core training I still would recommend the BLT swords as they are huge and heavy without being as unwieldy as the common generic swords with the infamous butterfly near the guard, those are very unwieldy with the guard being a little too wide for my taste, its basically a wide strip of metal.

I also have a few pairs. I have a pair of Wing Lam Leung Ting swords and they have the best half moon shape handles though the blades are like the hanwei pair, way too short for my long forearms.

Would love to pick up a pair of Wing Lams combat swords as they look like they have the right length plus handles big enough to hold on to. Hanwei's handles were like toothpicks in my mitts.

Sean- Those are some serious knives. I like the handles and the really wide blades. How long are the blades on those bad boys?? What do you think of the pair I have. You can see them on the link I provided.

Mending in Boston,

Dale... I'll have to double check tomorrow night at class, but I believe the blades are 21 inches long.

As far as yours... I almost bought a pair of those from Bok Lei Po until my sifu told me about these. :D

Sean,

Thanks for the quick reply. Them be mighty big blades compared to some of the other knives on the market.

Hey Sean,

I liked the ones shown here: http://www.bltsupplies.com/sweapons.html.
The fact that the end of the sword is wider works for me (unlike the ones at www.kriscutlery.com.)

They don't say much about the size though. I need them to be no longer then 33 cm (otherwise it'll cut the arm when I spin them).

Do you happend to know the size details?

According to the BLT page, they're 21 inches.

I'll measure them tonight. I forgot to measure them the other day. I'll post the dimensions tonight or tomorrow morning...

The total length of the weapon is 21 inches, stem to stern. The blade is 15 inches long. They weigh about 1.5 pounds per sword.

Nop.. Way too long for me. I need them to be about 15 inch - which is the exact size to cover my forearm.

The ones phoenix-eye suggested seem to be at the right size even though the blade gets narrow at the end.

Hmm..

Sounds like exactly the right length, Lost Oath. The blade is 15" which is the same as your forearm.

Hehe that's some groovy graphics, man!

Maybe I'm being stupid - it's happened before. That blade in your picture looks the right length for that arm.

The only way you could stab yourself is to rotate the wrist 180 degrees from shown in the pictures.

I don't do much training with woo dip dao and I can't think of any moves in spm that put you in that position of danger. If you got to a position like that you might as well worry about stabbing yourself between the ribs.

David

What I mean is when you twist the sword from position one (at the top of the pic') to position two (bottom right), and your arm isn't straight you will get cut (bottom left).

Guess it is a little hard to explain without a demo so lets drop it.

Simply let me know if you got a place selling 16-17 inch Butterfly Swords and you'll make me a happy man. :)
