Saw the link on another forum. Thought the people here might enjoy. I study praying mantis but it's not a full praying mantis curriculum. You should feel lucky that you have a school like this in your area.

Dang, I used to live in Austin, TX.

Seems like a good school, and a good sifu. His kungfu looks amazing and seems like he would be an amazing teacher, and understands everything :)

No offense to my school, but if I was in Austin again, definitely would have to give it a shot :)

He's an incredible teacher. Of course, I'd naturally say that since I'm his student :)

But in this case I really mean it.

Sifu Jeff Hughes... great guy. He was just at our school Monday and last night.

Very nice video. I can tell this Sifu can walk the walk! ;) This reminds me of one of the things that impressed me about Mantis Kung Fu (I currently take 8 Step Preying Mantis.) It was the fact that the Sifu’s appearances were always deceiving. Unlike Karate and other hard styles you see no bent noses, broken knuckles, broken toes, cauliflower ears, etc. They look like your average all American school guys, and you wouldn’t think they could fight just looking at them. I fully know this not to be true (ouch.):p

He looks nice and all in the video, but when you meet him face to face he doesn't come off as your average all American school guy. And GOOD LORD is he fast.

That video and this forum is restoring my faith in the Chinese martial arts, one mantis step at a time!:D I had to download the file over a 56K modem THREE TIMES as well as re-install Windows to watch it and it was still worth the work.

He has excellent technique, plus his explanations for working on forms wasn't the usual "if masters of the past worked on this, I'm not the one to argue." He has obviously put alot of thought into the CMA.

Does he have good students? Do they spar often, and apply what they learn? I'd love to see that!

Piolt,
Question for you.......... would you happen to be a student of my kung fu brother peter ray?

Nice clip, I love to see people promote our art in a positive way.

I remember that clip. For the guys that like to see more Wah Lum there you go.

Shaolin 7 Star Praying Mantis founded by Wong Long? Don't think so but overall the clip is nice. The only 7 Star I recognize is Bung Bo. The 2-man drill might be 7 Star.

See, this is why the politics and all that crap bugs me. He's avoiding using the Wah Lum name so he calls it 7 Star, which is misleading to the general public. Not only that but then Wah Lum doesn't get the credit it deserves and loses out.

what's the name of the 2nd hand form and single broadsword he demonstrated?

mantid1

Great WL video. That is what he said it was, right?

I have been told the second hand form may be called 6th exercise.

Hua Lin Laoshi

Technically he doesn't say but he talks about 7 Star and says he practices 7 Star but most of what's shown is Wah Lum. Go figure.

MantisWarrior
11-26-2005, 06:54 PM
yeah i study wah lum and the scene where he does the stance is exactly like the ones we do that order (i have no idea if other style do the same thing....so) and the opening moves are the same too and i've seen some of my sihing did stuff like him (the staff and double dao scene)

btw-for pushing hand, can i just make up a random set of movements involving stances? or is there a proper way to do the push hands? not talking about 2 man set where punches and lbockes are involve. cus like the video said, i want to develop the sensitivity of my forearms...

Shaolin 7 Star Praying Mantis founded by Wong Long

So are you saying it wasn't?!?!?

Wang Lang did not create 7 Star Praying Mantis. I think it was Li Zhi Zhan that created Qixing Tanglang.

By popular account Wang Lang created Praying Mantis which was later split off into branches such as Qixing.

Funny but all the 7 Star websites I go to make the claim that Wang Lang created 7 Star. Maybe one of the more reputable researchers could comment on this. Kevin? Robert? Bueller?

Here's a thread on the Mantis Quarterly forum concerning the names of the various styles and lineages of praying mantis.

http://www.mantisquarterly.com/forum/showthread.php?t=361

Personally, the whole idea that Tanglang came from Shaolin is because of what was written in the introduction of "Shaolin Yibol Zhenchuan" (Shaolin Authentics) by a native of Shandong - Shengxiao Daoren (mid 1700 CE) who said that it's based on Shaolin Monk Fu Ju's work - Luohan Xing Gong Duan Da (Arhat Short Strike). He also said that his student took the original copy from him and he had to rewrite and edit (with addition from him) to make another copy. Scholars in Mainland are inclined to believe that Louhan Xing Gong Duan Da is rather a folk martial arts indigenous to Shandong. Fan Xu Dong apparently gave his disciples copys of Shaolin Yibol Zhenchuan. This is also one of the reasons why some people coined the term "Louhan Tanglang" as an alias of Qixing Tanglang IMHO.

Warm regards

From what i gather Jefff Hughes studied under R Fogg who was 7 Star. Carl Albright and R Fogg, And Jeff Hughes are all tied into together. Could be wrong.. It would be nice to see more wah lum, everyone acts like it so close guarded. Rad

Hang tight and I'll put something up. I'm far from the best but at least you can get a glimpse.

BTW, I believe Raymong Fogg was a head instructor in Wah Lum way back before my time.

EDIT: Ok, check the Mantis Videos thread. Sorry I'm not a better performer but I'm in panic mode whenever I perform for a crowd.
