I live directly across the street from my sifu. :D

But, I only get to train with him when he's not travelling all over Europe. :(

A general rule is the closer the better. My experience has been that if a person has to travel a great distance they are more likely to eventually not want to travel that distance. Although I'm sure there are exceptions to this but usually closer is better.
Currently I'm only 10 mins away from Both Dojo's I train at and 5 mins from the Gym.

I don't call my teacher "sifu" but I drive about 10 minutes to train with him. 10-15 maybe.. depends on traffic.

JHS-you my friend, are a lucky man.
Reason I ask is for the same apprehension you stated. I am possibly going to switch to a different school that is a half hour away from my house and Im curious to see what the general publics threshold is on travelling(after work exct...).

heh, that's basicly the reason i stopped all together going to my old shifu (for other reasons i had been there wrather infrequently before i quit all together).

I found that i'm much more dedicated to training once i found a place to train nearby (it takes 10 minutes to walk raelly slowly there :) ).

For my sifu locally, about 20 minutes away.

For my internal teacher, about 6-7 hours.

We are trained in wushu; we must protect the Temple!

My teacher is about 30 mins fast walking, I try to go 3 or 4 times a week. My mate lives down the street tho so I usually go there after.

We actually train in my condo complex. Hard to beat that!

But I've driven for hours to meet and work out with peeps, so I suppose it balances out :)

my current sifu used to live with me

before that i used to travel about an hour 3 times a week.
It might not sound like a lot but in my country you can travel from one side of the island to another in about 2.5 hours

so its a hell of a trek for us.

what do bin laden and general custer have in common????

I remember a disciple back in Malaysia, who is one of the best MA I know now. He and his family used to travel across a state (about 2.5 hrs drive) just to come train, 4, count them 4 nights a week ! :)

He has been training for about 20 years.

i'm not interested in flying at all these days, and my sifu lives a thousand miles away, I have no time off coming my way for a while so I am out of luck in training with him.

I did spend almost seven years with him, training solid and doing sihing duties at the school. I train diligently on my own now. That's life.

still reading, training and looking for more knowledge in martial arts every single day.

I travel 3 hours to train with my current master.

He puts me up at his house when I can stay. Since I usually cannot due to my work schedule, I drive 3 hours back the same day.

I'll put up with quite a bit to study with the right master.
