red boats would carry entertainers up and down the river systems.

in revolutionary times, fighters would use the boats to hide from the overlords.

all sorts of kungfu fighters hid on these boats and cultivated their martial art on te pretext that it was just opera performing etc etc.

Not just the Red door secret society, but many other insurgents and revolutionaries hid their kungfu this way and spread it this way until the troubles had passed and they could settle.

the 'red boats' are actually a specific period durring which the junks were very large. i don't remember if the red junk period is the same as the more famous southern pirates era or not. but the southern pirates had a hero who was a tiger worker, djo fu djo lan, amongst the pirates and even some of the small towns he protected. a chinese film was made about him and his art in the film was modernized to clf-mantis. his art was really just a hodge podge of tiger techniques from pre hung gar, but it was enough to make a significant difference for him. he was not a teacher of his methods.
