View Full Version : How come there's notta lotta noise about Indian Martial Arts?

I mean, yeah, I know you guys all know about it, but the vast majority of martial artists in America I bet don't. Sh!t, even a lot of INDIANS don't know (definitely not the ABCDs - American Born Confused Desi...uh...Desi is a person of Indian origin).

I know there's debate whether or not Indian martial arts was the father to Chinese martial arts...but it's true, is it not, that Indian martial arts was around for a loooong time definitely as long as (if not longer than) Chinese martial arts.

So what's the deal? Do we need a Desi Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee? Actually, they are doing martial arts in some Bollywood movies, but it looks like typical movie kung-fu, I don't get the sense that they were doing Kalaripayattu at all. (eg see Awara Paagal Deewana)

All we really get a taste of is Aishwarya Rai (http://www.india-station.com/aishwarya/). She was interviewed on 60 min, last sunday. Granted she's hot, but she's not really a very good actress, and doesn't have awesome skillz like Michelle Yeoh or Zhang Ziyi.

What will it take for Indian MAs to get more noticed in America, and included into the canon?

Greetings,

The people at Cold Steel had a video featuring the use of one of the rattan sticks that they were selling (lahti?). I saw more similarities than differences to Chinese martial arts.

I do remember watching a segment on Indian programming called Visions of Asia. There was this guy dancing and singing to music. His body postures were definitely martial and were reminiscent of some of the twisted Lohan and drunken postures: even playing the flute. It was amazing to watch.

i wanna know about Indian wrestling. specially Vajramushti. they used to own. some of the most feared wrestlers in the world. even Karl Gotch didn't think there was enough money involved to risk wrestling the Great Gama. hard to find info about it tho... i only really can find out about the influence it had on Tibetan Lions Roar, but not about the style itself.

hint... hint.... linkage? :D

dude, simply there is no noise cos of the reasons you pointed:
lack of media

well if movies dont do no good
another way is using it to win in mma - if it wins in mma it gets exposed

i personally dont know jack about indian MA xepct for maybe a bit of kalari... huh... however its called... indian kung fu
:D
that was shirtless dudes doing forms with some weapons and also two men stuff
they also did something with oil i think...

essentially, what would you say the indian martial arts have to offer to the public that is not found on another styles? or is it just a historical matter?

allow me to add... getting is exposed and too popular is not always good... just look at the many mcdojos and mckwoons and mcTKD out there

who cares about Indian martial arts, Indian women are hot!!! If I had to pick a favorite nationality it would be a toss up between Israeli chicks and Indian Chicks. I'd probably swing to Indian chicks because Indian food is my favorite ethnic food.

I'll take the second on the left. What's her name?

As far as OT, in the movie "The Kama Sutra" there was a fight scene or two with Indian wrestling.

Indeed. As I said before, I'm neutral to SD, but it can't be as bad as is claimed.

And Parminder Nagra is the end all, the be all.

Get over it.

Good pts MoreMisfortune...
It just struck me as kinda odd, cuz yoga is SOOOO huge. And I believe that Indian MA incorporates yoga in their curriic.

It's almost like Chi Gung being more popular than Kung-Fu.

And yeah, oversaturation definitely leads to the reduction of quality in an art. I suppose also, those Indians and westerners who do practice it, probably don't make a lot of noise about it, and try to package and wholesale it.

Now, regarding the women, guys, I can see where you're coming from, but being ABCD myself, I have a preference towards Indian chicks born and raised in America. I know a FOB (fresh off the boat) when I see one, and that's all you listed! Not a bad thing, just not MY thing.

I like my ethnic chix American, for example, Sheetal Sheth (http://www.sheetalsheth.com/photogallery.htm#)

There isn't a lot of noise about it because of a couple of reasons:

a) Kalaripayit is not a hugely widespread martial art to begin with. It is localized to a relatively small region in India and pretty much non-extant in the rest of the world.

b) India, like most other places has martial arts, but they are the same as elsewhere and are the TKD and Karate that are popular everywhere else. Kalari, like Kungfu, is hard and student retention, especially to the level of high proficiency is rare.

c)Kalari is one of those arts that has recently been noticed because of the overall interest in MA and people looking for whats out there. However, because of the first two conditions it is not likely it will flourish beyond a highly esoteric level. It probably won't die out completely, but it is quickly going that route. It is hard to gain instruction in and is highly ritualized on top of that.

Two Singhs were sitting outside a clinic.
One of them was crying like hell.
So the other asked, "Why are you crying?"
The first one replied, "I came here for blood test"
Second one asked, "So? Are you afraid ?"
First one replied, "No, not that. During the blood test they cut my finger"
Hearing this the second one started crying & screaming.
The first one was astonished and asked other, "Why are you crying?"
The other replied, "I have come for my urine test."

Odd, I didn't know there were Polish Singhs.

Matt-

That is an elephant head training stance. Like good kung fu---
there are developmental routines in kalaripayat prior to fighting.

India was once full of hundreds of martial styles. Much decline took place with the coming of the Brits, the end of battles, the decline of rajas and nawabs who sponsored fighters.

The west particularly American have had their attention in military,
political and missionary matters more on the Pacific Rim than on India (just as well <g>).

Most middle class Indians one is likely to meet specially abroad
dont know much about India and are products of tunnel vision education. And television has played its role in introducing karate(ugh), tkd(ughugh). Does not mean that martial arts has vanished-
there are still kalaris and akharas, various rural training places and other places where different arts survive. There is kalari in Kerala and tamil nadu- several different versions, gatkha sword and stick play in the Punjab, various kinds of stick and lathi figthing in various places,
sword and weapons play, hand and kukhri work in Nepal and the
Gorkha land section of bengal, some musthi work around Benaras,
archery in Ladakh and manipur and some close quarters choking and garroting among thug groups, rural pit wrestling/kusthi(not on mats). Various forms of yoga provide some of the arts their
chi gung components. Marma shastra is alive and well among some good teachers- delivery to and knowledge of strike points.

Given social stratification the urban middle class is often out of the loop.

Oh and BTW, have you heard of a warrior caste or family or tribe -based art called 'Naim'? I heard the name years and years ago on an old BBC programme about Indian martial arts, and I can't remember anything else about it...

I like the name elephant. It's a little poetic, but descriptive enough... and not as poncy as 'small hysterical monkey scratches nuts and picks his cherry' or something!
