Premier Zhao was the leader and the engineer behind China's open door policy.

Most of the economic reforms are started with his cabinet.

In 1989, his pro-student stance cut short his political life.

He was placed in house arrest for 15 years till now.

He passed away.

I vividly remembered that he was using a loud speaker to request the students to go home. The government will consider your requests. It was broadcasted by BBC TV.

He represented a compromise between the Party hardliner and the students.

Neither side listened to him.

He was considered too soft on students and removed from power.

For the most part of his political life, he was close to people and the members of his cabinet. He steered China into the modern world after ravages of Culture Revolution in the 60' and early 70's.

The leader that is close to the people and listens to the people is truely a leader.

During the Culture Revolution, he was sent to Inner Mongolia.

Never and never in his whole life, he used the military against the people. He just visited and talked to the people.

Even he had the PLA under his control, he still visited the hunger strike students in hospitals and talked to the students in Tian An Men square.

His last pubic appearance was in May 19, 1989.

He was demoted after that.

From May 20 onward to June 4th, the Army was in support of Li Peng and Deng to--

He was in support of democracy and rule of laws over the feudalism and culture revolution.

He was 85 years old.

I read many articles suggesting that there will be a new call to reform in china because of his death. Though of course the chinese government will attempt to hinder or cover-up as much as possible from outside media.

Do you think there will be any truth to this in the near future?

SPJ

Zhao was offered to come back three times.

He refused. He said unless the students are pardoned, he will not assume any public position.

He refused the most powerful position in China and his personal freedom just to be on the side of the students and people. Not once, but three times or till he passed away.

He will be remembered by Chinese everywhere.

There are many more poems in his memory.

In the previous post, Black Hawk from Canton said:

He is willing to give up the robe of the dragon or the reign of a emperor, just not to shoot at his own people.

He represents human rights or rights of the people.

He will be remembered.

CCP decided that there will be a service on Ba Bao Shan where all the revolutionary leaders buried.

A portrait of Zhao was set up in his study where he spent 15 years.

Only relatives and friends may visit his study with permission. The house needs repairs. But CCP did not allocate money to do so.

Among them, daughter of Hu Yao Bang and mother of Wang Dang visited and paid respect.

Hu and Zhao are Deng's left and right hand to engineer the new economic in the late 70's and 80's.

Wang Dang is the leader of the student movement and in exile in the west.

He requested his mom to visit Zhao's study and paid respect.

CCP admitted that Zhao contributed greatly to the people and the party and yet made a serious mistake in June 4 Tian An Men incident.

CCP did not disclose the time or the way that they will hold the service. Not open to public yet.

Some hearsay;

As the eastern block disintegrated and communist parties fell apart in Russia and eastern Europe in 1989;

CCP was highly alert. They nicknamed to prevent SU DONG PO the waves from the Russia in the east.

The student mass in the Tian An Men gathered for a while.

The 38 th and 42 nd Army did not want to move against his own people. The units are stationed to guard the capital and the north east area of China.

On May 29, 1989, Jiang was summoned from Shanghai by Deng. He was to replace Zhao. It is called Jiang Li system in place of Zhao Li system.

CCP saw a revolution at hand.

Small number of troops were ordered from different units from southwest China to come to Beijing.

They do not know one another, thus no cohesion.

If you have a huge civilian mass and an Army under one general, CCP maybe overthrown, if the general stands with the people.

--

CCP stayed while its counterparts in Russia and eastern block buried by the heaps of ashes in history as said by President Reagan at the time.

China has 5000 years of history and one century of revolution.

As far as republic and democracy for China, premier Zhao was remembered by people as well as Dr. Sun Yat Sen.

There are many poems refering the 2 together.

Dr. Sun did not complete his republican and democratic goals alive.

Premier Zhao completed some goals, there is no name for him when he passed away.

China 1.3 billionth souls and sleepy dragons.

Wept for both.

Premier Zhao is considered as hero of the people by many.

Ming Tzu Yin Xiong.

These are what people are saying and what I heard.

MTYX are from people telling the stories.

It is not offered by the government or any agency.

It is the voice of the people.

There is a 8 day reservation on Ba Bao Shan.

There is a heated debate among the senior and ruling CCP members.

What to do with the service for the most popular CCP chair?

Younger generation may not know him. Zhao was hidden from the public to be forgotten for 15 years.

But anyone older than 40 years old knows who he is.

In the meantime, there are many memorial sites setup across the globe, where Chinese reside.

Nobody knows what the CCP decides to do?

update;

On 29 Jan, CCP did hold a limited service on Ba Bao Shan before the burial.

The securities are still tight near Tian An Men square.

The democratic and student movements leaders are on house watch. Or not to leave home.

Zhao had close talk with Russian leader at the time.

Zhao said that he is open to multiple parties politic.

For the most part, he still believed the rule by CCP alone in China.

It was a critical juncture in 1989.

Deng and many other CCP members believed that CCP either make it or break it.

Jiang wrote some articles in Shanghai papers. He was the mayor of Shanghai. Jiang indicated the side of CCP rule than pro-student. Thus he was handpicked by Deng to be the successor.

People complained about inflation under Zhao. But he demonstrated that he is with the people all the time. He is pro-student, even appologized and said that I came too late. Uo Lai Wan Le.

This was what people remembered him.

And yes, there was a chance that China may follow Russia that year.

All the students in campuses accross China were out on the streets.

Nobody seemed to know what to do.

And yes, Deng came out and made decisions. Deng has 4 insistences. Insistence on the rule of CCP. Insistence on the path of socialism. etc.

Jiang has 8 points. Jiang Ba Dian.

And yes, Zhao has the hearts of the people.

Hu and Wen are technocrats than revolutionaries. They did a good job to keep everybody happy on Zhao's burial.

Freedom and democracy will come to China.

People and student movement leaders said in return.

Uo Lai Wan Le.

We came late. Zhao was in house arrest for 15 years. We did not redeem his freedom and name.

So people apologized to him and mourned.

Chinese politics are always group related.

Some may say Zhao tried to use the students to oust Deng.

Zhao was accused of "splitting the Party". He was stripped of all powers. He was not even a citizen of PRC. No funds for repairing the house he resided in.

He had many people in his group, including US university professors, bankers and many talents. They were ousted at the same time.

Power politics are not what people "care".

What if Zhao and his group did not lose power? Will China be more free or chaotic?

What CCP feared was the disintergration of CCP just like those in the eastern block and Russian Republics.

What Deng and hardliner feared was that Zhao may "destroy" the party and not the country. The students were demanding the resignations of all Party leaders. It meant to tell CCP to give up the power to rule. The students are not even listening to Zhao. Who are they going to listen to? themself?

In hardliners' minds, the interest of the Party is above everything else.

"Zhao was endangering the survival of CCP and not the country."

SPJ

Zhao knew things are going bad for the students.

In the last minute, Zhao and Wen or Hu went to the square to warn them.

The students still had no clues. After that, Zhao was removed from the power.

If someone else in Zhao's position, he or she may consider him or her self first and not risking everything to "warn" the students that were not listening to him.

On the one hand, the most powerful position in China, on the other hand, the lives and safety of the students?

What would be your choice?

If it were you?

SPJ

College students have unique places in Chinese history and politics.

They are the talents and the "power" of the China's future.

Both Hu and Zhao were popular with the students. They represent movements toward the future. Out of the destruction of Cultural Revolutions.

Deng and Zhao were all persecuted during that period. Zhao had the power to order the military to retaliate against the Red Guards at the time. He did not.

What struck people is that, Zhao was invited by Deng to come back. Only he had to do is to confess that the students are wrong. No, he said that the students are right and should be pardoned. If not, he will not assume any public office.

Evaluation of characters of a leader or any man sometimes is based on the little things.

For these; people admired him.
