lately I have been having a cup of oatmeal for breakfast with a scoop of vanilla protein powder mixed in.

it's delicious, but am I compromising the protein by heating it?

I've heard that heating protein powder breaks down the amino acids. But who knows at what temperature this happens at. I sure don't.

On one hand, I've done the oatmeal thing a lot in the past. Actually did it to the point that I can't eat prot-meal without supressing a gag response.

On the other hand, I left a bottle of Surge in the car for a week during the hottest days of summer. That bottle tasted decidedly different.

I think protein powder generally follows the same recommendations as nutrasweet when it comes to heat (especially considering some protein powders contain some kind of sugar replacement).
In other words:
Tossing some equal in your coffee tends to be okay if your coffee's not that hot for more than say 15~20 min; but hot sugar free gum that's been sitting in a scalding hot car all day = not so okay.

So long as you're not microwaving/cooking the protein for too long, I don't forsee too much denaturing.

I'd have to research it, but I heard in a lecture last week that protein "cooks" at 343K, so you're probably safe. I doubt you could eat 343K oatmeal, although it may reach that high while cooking. So maybe mix it in after it's cooked.

Things I've mixed protein powder with that work:

Milk, yoghurt, various homemade protein bars.

Things I've mixed protein with that don't work:

Juice, water.

Oatmeal would work I guess.

Why would protein be effected by the heat? Some other components in the mix maybe, but not protein. You grill your steaks and chicken, boil your eggs etc, don't you? Do they loose protein in the process?

If you think it might happen, just add the protein afterwards. And while you're at it, grate some fresh apples there. Yummy! It takes your oatmeal on a whole new level! :)

yea, protein is changed in cooking meat and becomes less bioavailable, I believe. That's why I asked. :)

I add toasted pecans, a little ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg.... mmmmmmmmM. Dried cherries are good too.

I dunno - I've mixed it with various juices and it was fine - some better than others, though.

well, as my shrfu keeps saying about our grand teacher, and chinese in general, they care about money. Sushi is hot right now and who needs another chinese buffet.

one of my students is this family's realtor and I've helped them with one of thier houses...talk about frustrating situations:

Imagine me sitting on the roof of a house with an old chinese dude, who doesn't speak a lick of english, trying to explain to him why his ventilator fan isn't working.

we do occasionally get the hook up at the restaurants:)

tell me about it. There's a chinese buffet around the corner that also has all you can eat sushi made ready to order. tell them what you want, they make it.

The lobby of the place I frequent most has a straight sword hanging on the wall. I mentioned it, hoping to find out that he trained, as it's always cool to find a new training buddy, but it turns out that he just thought the sword looked cool.

yea, I always wonder whether the chinese people who own these restaurants are hidden kung fu masters. I know better since I think the % of chinese who train is much less than americans.

however, there is supposedly a 'hidden treasure' here in Asheville in one of the restaurant owners. He's supposed to be a tai chi guy but won't talk to anyone about it. I've met him one evening...he makes a good martini :) but I didn't have enough of them to get up the nerve to question him.

I used to think the same thing. I've gotten over it now, though. I just saw the sword and hoped they had it for more than decorative reasons. FWIW, several years ago I did get introduced to someone once who worked in one of my favorite chinese places who was somewhat interested in ma. A good friend of mine was a waitress there, and she told me about him. She had to translate for us because he didn't speak much english, but he ended up dropping by our thai and kali classes. he came to two classes then never showed back up. He had a hectic work schedule which stopped him from training, but whenever I was at the restaurant, I'd tell someone to tell him I was there and he'd hook me up every time.

Hey Axe Man,

Can you get this "hook up" at the sushi place? Matters not, lets go there anyway. Chinese New Years, lion dancing, kung fu, sushi/sake in Asheville... this is overwhelming!

Hey Yu shan,
who's staying with me? I have a queen size inflatable mattress that I will set up here or give to Matt depending on where folks are crashing out.

and back on topic, I just mixed a scoop of protein powder into my frozen slushy fruit drink. Don't do that, it gets all clumpy and wierd.

the hook up is pretty random...depends on who's working.

i think yu shan and all his boys can stay with you and the rest of the party can stay with me ;)
