Was just involved in a HUGE explosion!!!! [Archive]

I was driving west on I-55, and some sort of tank or something blew up. The explosion was HUGE!!! All the cars in traffic suddenly jambed over to the left lane forceing me into a ditch to avoid them. I almost hit the guard rail comming up the other side and trying to squeez betwen a car and the rail itself.

It was wierd, there was nothing but clear blue sky, then INSTANTLY a huge mini mushroom like cloud!! Then a few seconds later there were huge fire balls!! Then in another few seconds the BOOM!! hit my car and rocked it as I drove by (That's when all the traffic learched to the left really hard)

Man, I haven't had an adrenilin rush like that since I fell down the water fall at Starved Rock 5 years ago!!!

Get the news on boys, no WAY this ain't gonna be on tonight!!

NO, not made up. Chicago guys, watch the news tonight!! No way in he!! this won't be on. It happened about an hour ago at best, so I don't think it will be up yet, but real soon I'm sure!!

I wasn't close enough to be in danger, but DAMMM my car rocked when the Boom hit it!!

I was in more danger of getting hit by all the other cars that jammbed over to the left real hard. Although I came close to brushing the guard rail. I was doing about 20 or more as I was accellerateing trying to make it back up the embankment and not getting stuck.

Just heard something on the news, right now they are calling it a "*Fire* at the ship yards" on Cicero ave.

Trust me, it was a huge explosion, no mear fire.

Defenetly!! I can't wait to see it on the news tonight!! I have never seen anything like it in my life!! It happened about an hour ago, I'm still shaki'n!!

The news is showing it now!!! CLTV is covering it!!

It was an oil barge in the sanitary & Shipping canal!

It's burning right now, and sinking into the canal.

**** thats kinda cool to see, but not experience. i hope not to many people got hurt and that 1 person pulls through, unless they rather be dead. but good thing your still with us.

Buddy Hafner said he was driving on the Stevenson Expressway when he heard the explosion. Hafner said the blast was "phenomenal."

I was about a 1/4 to half mile from the blast at best. It literally rocked my car. Most of the jolt was me yanki'n on the wheel though (I think).

The video, and pics don't do it justice though. That's all after the fact. The blast itself was spectacular. Actually, considering what I saw, I can't fathom theres anything left of that barge.

Look at image #6, my car went rigth under the black smoke right there. Actually I went through it. Right after the blast, it was right in the street, and not over it as seen in this pic. Stuff was falling on the car out of the black smoke cloud. My car has a black oily "Film" on it and everything.

Look at the meridian between the east, and west bound lane. That is the ditch I had to go into to avaoid the cars jambing over to the left.

Right after I read where you wrote "barge" on the first page, they said "barge" on TV in the other room. They're talking about it right now on ABC.

I was outta there in a short amount of time. Once the fire all died down, it just looked like any old fire. I was late for an assigment as well.

You know, most people get into bar fights and stuff like that. No, not me I get blown up by oil barges and driven off the road into a ditch!! :eek:

Theyn are saying a worker accidentally blew it up from trying to relight a boiler on the barge.

How they could know that with it still sunk on the bottom of the canal at this point in time is beyond me. They probably don't want anyone knowing it was a terrorist.

I wasn't "Invoved" in blowing the barge up, but I was invloved in the explosion. My car has a film of oil all over it to prove I was close enough to the blast to be "Invloved".

Basically, Barge go BOOOM!!!, RD was right there in the smoke as it happened.

The only reason I didn't hit another car was becasue I have superior driving skills,and was able to put my car in the ditch, go around all the other cars, and come back out onto the shoulder with out getting stuck in the snow (or rolling my car).

You try intentionally putting your car into a snow slicked ditch to keep from hitting another car, at 60+ mph and lets see how well you do.

I like being invloved. Getting invloved just gives you a nice warm fuzzy feeling inside. Not like getting invoved or involved, which is just a yucky experience.
