I thought this would be good to start a thread for Wing Chun people who are mainly interested in fighting with WC. Discussing the pro and cons, training methods, fighting experiences or whatever one feel applies to fighting using WC. This thread isn't meant to be divisive or cause dissent amongst the WC forum members, one camp against another, but there are those here that want to test or WC in a more "realistic" way. And the people who have other view points about WC training won't have to worry about personal attacks. I'm going to start posting WC for fighting clips here and though chi sau and forms are important I'll send any chi sau or form clips to the other thread.

Well, Phil...think I'll start by talking about training methods.

When my student, Mike Mundy, won that contact fighting tournament back in the day...wherein I knew that a more straight-ahead chain punch and front kick type Wing Chun school would be competing...as well as some Karate schools that were invited...

I made sure that I, and a bunch of my other students, did the "other type" of Wing Chun for him when sparring...and some of my ex-karate students worked with him - and last but not least...on the day before the event I took Mike to my friend Al DiGrazia's Karate school (Kyokushin)- and had Mike spar one of Al's black belts (full contact) for an hour.

It all paid off.

Michael Mundy won the Grand Championship of the tournament. (By the time Mike was supposed to fight...two different Karate guys already beat two Wing Chun guys - and then Mike beat both Karate guys).

Working against people trained in other methods of fighting is extremely important.

Hey Victor, I have that fight with your student. Would you like me to put it up here? I think that point tournaments have their value. It's one way to progress to full contact. Plus, Mike really uses TWC in his matches. He used clean and concise techniques. I' going to watch it again tonight. Thanks for reminding me.

We doing sparring with gear this Sat. I hope to have some fottage. Remember these guys are from Karate, boxing, BJ, and other arts but wanted learn WC. (I teach in a school that has many arts).
I'm trying to show them how to use WC under pressure. One of the guys just won a full contact match at the bi-monthly full contact matches I posted about on another thread. So expect some of them to revert back to their old training at time. As they get more confidence in using WC under pressure you'll see more WC.

Put it up...Phil.

One thing I liked about that tournament - even though it was points...they wore gloves and headgear and allowed contact - including head shots. That was back in 1993.

Mike should have been on these recent videos I put up - he was there that day...giving me his usual hard time sparring before Myron got geared up...but at one point - when I threw a lead leg kick at Mike's lead leg...

he raised his leg to block at a funny angle and took the toe of my sneaker right in the groin...and it got in under his cup.

But he'll also be at class for the next scheduled filming - Saturday, Feb. 12.

Hope to include him in the videos.

Another one of my students - with me for many years also...presently living and doing some film work in Japan - will also be in town and is coming to class on February 12.

His name is Kimathi Innis...and his father is Roy Innis (C.O.R.E. - Congress of Racial Equality).

Should be a good day.

These clips are from a NY tournament where Victor Palati's student Michael Mundy fought. It would be better to right click and save the second clip, it's 100MB

I think people put way too much emphasis on chi sau.

I do the forms and I do the chi sau/gerk

I do drills based on my weakpoints.

I do no contact sparring, and as my sparing partners get better and better we get closer and closer until we are just touching each other with fast strikes.

Then I do inch punch training and fa-jing testing chi sau.

Then we get together and spar with the intent and the craziness.

At that point no onlooker can tell the difference between a real fight except in the end, no one's hurt.

Then do the forms again and maybe take a walk and talk about pleasant things relaxedly, inside feeling happy and full of chi but still like a cat ready to pounce.

I think that is the best way to learn wing chun.
It culminates into a terrifying experience and the only way to keep from getting hit is to resign yourself to death, but when its all over, you realise that no one's hurt and everything's pleasant.

I had a troubled childhood.
