Here's a clip of our Lion Dance practice. We're practicing to do a Lion Dance for Chrysler on Feb. 9th and we also do Lion Dances for Chinese businesses in SE Michigan. The guy you see in the head is Stephen Cao. He's a Chen style TCC Sifu and was in a Lion Dance fight scene in one of Jet Li's "Once Upon A Time In China" movies. We're looking to train people to join the troupe. If you live in the Metro Detroit area and are interested please email me.

Saam Nim Ho, Phil!

For a guy who claims no major 'net skills, you sure can splash that media up! :)

Is the Chinese New year Feb. 4?... or is it on Feb. 8? I'm confused. Some say it's Feb. 4; some say it's Feb. 8. Which one is it?

Taken from an internet source and seems to completely explain things:

"The Chinese New Year day is on February 9th, 2005. Because this is a new moon day, it is the first day of the first Chinese lunar month in the Chinese Lunar Calendar system. The new moon time is at 06:28 on 9-Feb-05 in China time zone. However, the new moon time is at 14:28 of 8-Feb-05 in the US Pacific Standard Time and also at 17:28 of 8-Feb-05 in the US Eastern Standard Time, so the Chinese New Year day is on February 8th, 2005 for USA time zones."

Phil,

Do you still have a Lion Dance Troupe in MI? Is it separate from the TWC club that you own?

How long have you been performing the lion dance?

Thanks!

Yes, We do the Lion Dance in Michigan. The clip I sent was on Sunday, Feb 6th in MI. The Lion Dance troupe is separate from the school. I first learned the Lion Dance back in the 80's. I was in Hung Mun (Chinese Freemasons) in NYC and we used to do the Lion Dance in Chinatown for New Years. I started teaching TWC to members of the ACA (Association of Chinese Americans). When they found out that I'd done the Lion Dance they asked me to join the ACA and help teach it as well. We now do Dances all over Detroit and the suburbs. There is a growing Chinese community here and many businesses use our services. Since we are a non-profit organization we get donations from private organizations and the automotive industry. We do shows and events for Chyrsler, Ford and GM. In fact we have to perform for Ford Motor Co. tonight at place called Greenfield Village. Sifu Stephen Cao a new ACA member from China, who is also a Chen style TCC sifu and movie stuntman in Jet Li movies, joined the troupe. I've been learning form him. He's a better Lion Dancer than I am. ;)
