While we're on the topic, Gene & I have been batting around some possible ideas for new t-shirts...

Just saw it last Thursday. Definitely worth seeing.

There's some REALLY bad acting, and the first couple of fights aren't that well choreographed, but the final fight makes up for it very much. The chase scene easily rivals that of Jackie Chan's early 70s/80s movies.

Gets a thumbs up from me.

@PLUGO

I was impressed with most of the fight choreography (except for the horrid one where the "big bad guy" threw cups, etc, at Ting).

I thought the acting was marginal and the chase scenes pointless. Sure, he can run and jump and flip and it is very impressive... but if the guys chasing him can keep up just by running normally, what's the point?:)

The stunts were pretty good for the most part. The stunts (and fighting) were the main reason to watch this movie; you certainly wouldn't watch it for the amazing cinematography. :p Blurry and overly-red describes many of the scenes in the movie and the taxi chase is one of the most innane and pointless chase scenes I have ever seen. The plot was full of holes and the guy with the electric voice box was so annoying that they gave up on having him use it for the last few scenes. It was also funny watching the audience reacting to some of the less-impressive stunts in the movie while failing to notice some of the cleanest fight work in the film at all. I hope that the main actor (Jaa?) gets some roles in better films because he is good.

I just saw it last night. It was indeed pretty cool. refreshing to see a movie like this I'm so sick of people flying all over the place and watching computer graphics dominate. not to say that stuff doesn't have it's place, and can't be appreciated. I hope this movie ong bak sets a new trend in a revival of the more realistic approach to fighting movies and less of the fantastical.

SimonM
03-04-2005, 07:20 PM
Yeah and if they can get the action director from this movie together with a cinematographer from hollywood (or China) you might just make a good fight movie.

Starchaser107
03-04-2005, 07:25 PM
If we're going that far might as well throw in an excellent screenwriter for a better script and dialogue.

SimonM
03-05-2005, 08:48 AM
Yeah but I'd put up with corny dialogue and a poor script if the fighting and camera work are good.

I think with this, and "Unleashed" we are actually seeing the new trends begining. No wires, all realistic style.

Definately a fresh raw movie. I thought the voice box was funny as hel!, especially when he laughed "bzzzzzzzz" LOL

The best fight I think was the last psycho in the fight club.

I like his front thrust kick. Granted, it's glam'd up a bit, it's still cool to watch a movie make use on one in that manner.

i downloaded and watched it, it was in thai w/japanese sub, so i didn't understand it at all but i would have to say that it was one of best fight scenes that i have watched in a long time. one scene i didn't like is that one fight scene with that big grunting guy that throws stuff.

his fighting style didnt look very thai to me, at first i thought it was chinese martial arts because of his stance and arm positions, almost like praying mantis or snake.
he did use the elbows and knees of muai thai very well though. but didnt he have a certain cma style about him, especially his manuvering and weaving and attacking with a small circular defense/offense. very cool though, i heard he was the best fighter in the world for his class.(so i hear)

I thought it was rather refreshing. I was getting a little tired of the whole grand Chinese tragic period piece with too much wire-fu.
My weapons teacher said of House of Flying Daggers: "Too much smoochy-smoochy, not enough knifey-knifey." As you might guess, he absolutely loved
Ong-bak.

Saw the movie a few months ago at a friends house. I thought the fights scene were good, but they seemed repetative (elbow knee elbow knee). I like the stunt work, jumping through panes of glass, giant flying knees. All good stuff. I must say though that the giant double flying knee to finish off the last fight was worth the price of admition.

Am I alone in disliking Ong Bakh?

Tony Jaa is a talented young man, yes, but I found that didn't outweigh:

The lousy camera work
The even lousier lighting
The almost laughably preachy plot
The (imho) unexciting and mediochrely executed fight scenes
And the really annoying thai techno during the taxi scene!

TenTigers

well, since many of us were weaned on Golden Harvest and Shaw Bros. films with the likes as the Venom Gang,Jimmy Wang Yu, David Chiang, and Ti Lung, how can you compare your criticisms with

poor dubbing-I love hearing John Wayne's voice coming out of Bruce Lee's mouth

ridiculous fight scenes-I love the counter stepping footwork routines

plot? what's a plot? oh yeah,'You killed my (insert Master, Father,Brother,Family, Clan,Dog for all you Country Western Kung-Fu fans)

Backround Music-the same music they use on porno movies (well, from what they tell me. Of course I haven't actually seen a porno flick)

BTW-I just saw the trailer for his newest flick-we should be getting it in Chinatown in a few months, and it should hit the screens in a few years-it is amazing-more viscious technique, I was rewinding it over and over again

SIMON
I am not nominating it for the academy, just loved the moves, great muay thai set in the beggining, awsome leaps through, over and under various objects, and great agility, super cool fight scenes. as for plot, language, lighting and best boy grip and best supporting actor........ see 10 tigers post

TenTigers
09-21-2005, 08:26 PM
BTW-the reason that guy had this ridiculous afro is because he was wearing a wig over a helmet. The reason his stance and some of his technique didn't look like Muay Thai is because he specializes in Muay Boran, which is the "old skool" of Thai Boxing, before it became a sport. Wider stances, many similarities to Hung-Ga in their "blocking" as well. Very cool stuff to see.

I finally saw the movie and thought is was really great. I loved the fights and the way that he fought from a single form (for the most part) breaking down and aplying each traditional move. Brutal fights. And the guy could move. Very nice.

You're always thinking ahead MK.

You should check it out this weekend. It's pretty good. I just watched kung-fu hustle too. While it was more "entertaining" I thought the fighting and action were much better in Ong Bak.

MasterKiller

OK... I watched it. After all the hype, I was disappointed. It was pretty much like any Kung Fu movie ever made. I guess because it was Muay Thai instead of kung fu it made some people here cream their jeans.

I give it 2.5 stars.

SimonM
09-24-2005, 06:55 PM
I'd have given it the same rating if not for three things:

1: The cave fight scene was so poorly lit that it obscured a lot of the action.

2: I saw the boom mike drop into the screen WAY too often.

3: The taxi chase scene. It was boring, too long, and the AWFUL music in the background during that scene gave me a headache.

1.5 stars out of 5 and it was lucky to get that. A totally disappointing film.

We'll be under the big Farris wheel. YOu won't miss it, there will be 2 wino's and a guy who looks like Mike Tyson operating the Farris wheel.

I rented it last week from Hollywood Video. Tony Jaa looks pretty tough. It had some funny/corny parts in it and the acting wasn't great but it had a couple of good fights. Some are more realistic than others, but the guy's technique looks solid. I will be looking for more titles from this actor, and from the general production team. I'll recommend it.

There’s an Ong-Bak video game coming… (http://www.lazygamer.net/xbox-360/theres-an-ong-bak-video-game-coming/) Getting There
Geoffrey Tim January 18th, 2012 clock image 11:30 am

I don’t know how many of you are in to foreign martial arts flicks, but if you are, you’ve no doubt seen Tony Jaa’s Ong-Bak. It’s a Thai movie about a young kickboxer trying to retrieve a sacred treasure from from Bangkok’s crime under world – featuring some of the very best martial artistry ever committed to celluloid.

Released nearly a decade ago, it’s now getting a video game adaptation.

Studio HIVE has announced it’s acquired the licence to use the property for video games, and will be bringing Ong-Bak to consoles later this year.

“Ong-Bak is well known as a powerful international martial arts brand,” says Sahamongkol Film International business development director Akarapol Techaratanaprasert in a press release “We are very selective with our licensing partners and found in Studio HIVE the right partner to bring Ong-Bak to gaming platforms. “Their approach to tie in movie and game is the right way to create a perfect interactive entertainment.

Kan Supabanpot, General Manager at Studio HIVE adds: “It’s a great honour for our team to work on the very first Ong-Bak multiplatform game. As a Thai development studio we love the movie and have a deep understanding of the Ong-Bak brand values and we make sure that the videogame will be an inspiring martial arts action experience for gamers.”

I just don’t see this working, but I delight in being proved wrong. The last game I played that was based off of an asian film property was Stranglehold, featuring a digital version of Chow Yun Fat. It…wasn’t too bad, provided you’re able to disengage your brain for a few hours.
Exactly how powerful an international martial arts brand do you think Ong Bak is?
